They are active during the day and spend most of their time on the ground. Their preferred foods are fruit and seeds, but mandrills will consume leaves, piths, mushrooms, and animals from insects to juvenile antelope. Mandrills live in large, stable groups known as "hordes" which can number in the hundreds. Females form the core of these groups, while adult males are solitary and only reunite with the larger groups during the breeding season. Dominant males have the most vibrant colors and fattest flanks and rumps, and have the most success siring young. In contrast, the blue photons take very short steps in between their scattering events, and they don’t penetrate very deep. They do not make it past Tissue A before they emerge and hit your eye. Some authorities have divided mandrill populations into subspecies: the northern mandrill ( M. s. sphinx) and the southern mandrill ( M. s. madarogaster). A proposed third subspecies, M. s. insularis, was based on the mistaken belief that mandrills are present on Bioko Island. [14] [15] The consensus is that mandrills belong to one subspecies ( M. s. sphinx). [16] Red butts in monkeys and other primates serve various purposes, including indicating fertility and social status. It’s fascinating that some monkeys have more vibrant and colorful butts than others. While some, like the mandrills, have multicolored bums, others, like the Celebes crested macaque, have outrageously swollen and bright red butts.

His bottom is causing chaos... Bump! Crash! Splat! Soon Bear is in great big trouble! Can he ever make it up to his friends? Researchers remain intrigued by this species’ eyes that strongly resemble its human cousins. Some primatologists speculate that this primate’s blue bottom is also valuable for attracting mates. However, the exact reason for the blue butt is still unknown. Nevertheless, the lesula is a fascinating new monkey species that will continue generating interest and excitement among scientists and laypeople. Blue-Butt Vervet Monkey So the bear grabs the paintbrush, and the box of colours, and proceeds to paint the bum cheeks of the cheeky monkey “as bright as a blue summer sky” (that’ll teach him!) and furthermore goes on to paint the monkey’s face for good measure. Now the crestfallen monkey looks just like a clown, with his red white and blue face (and bright blue bottom) - and to cap it all, all the other animals giggle to themselves whenever he passes by.

It is well worth joining us, there is so much more once inside. The mandrill is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Its biggest threats are habitat destruction and hunting for bushmeat. Gabon is considered the stronghold for the species. Its habitat has declined in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, while its range in the Republic of the Congo is limited. a b Setchell, J. Cytochrome-b sequences suggest that mandrill populations north and south of the Ogooué River split 800,000 years ago and belong to distinct haplogroups. This divergence appears to have also led to the splitting of the mandrill strain of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). [17] The draft (incomplete) genome of the mandrill was published in 2020, with a reported genome size of 2.90 giga–base-pairs and high levels of heterozygosity.
