The small files allow you to view or share specific moments, for example with your insurance company after an incident, without requiring ‘Technical’ editing skills. I noticed the picture wasn’t perfectly smooth when played back through the NextBase programme, not sure if this was a limitation on my Laptop or the software, but when I played the file direct from the Laptop File browser through my media player … WOW … the resulting playback was fantastic and super smooth … like I was back in the car. There are 7 touch sensitive buttons on the dash cam: power, up/mic, down/display, protect/wifi, menu, record/ok and mode. However as a stand alone as the rear camera, I have had to switch off the parking mode on the 212 , as it kept triggering and draining its internal batteries. There are times, as will all dashcams, that the number plates can be hard to read - especially when headlights or sunlight is reflecting on them.

I hate the next part, just at the point of new-toy excitement you have to charge the unit for two hours before first use, oh well, I suppose I could download the manual off the supplied disc and install the NextBase programme to the Laptop. If you upgrade to a Series 2 Camera, there are 3 different Series 2 Rear Cameras that are all compatible with the 322GW, 422GW, 522GW and 622GW. Despite our reservations about this, they work pretty well and LEDs light up when you touch them to help you know where you press. And as with all dash cams, the oldest files will be overwritten when the card is full, so you always have the most recent four hours of driving. If you’re desperate for a bit more storage on your memory card or never envisage using the WiFI smartphone link then you can always disable the Dual-Files in the dashcam settings. However, even though it says ‘Dash Cam not connected’ it does, occasionally, let me view the videos.

This will be a permanent feature in the car and is definitely worth the few seconds it takes to clip in place at start/end of each trip. Either of these options will ensure that you have clear, high quality video evidence of any incident that occurs. The magnetic clip hold feature is great but the disadvantage this carries is when one wants to connect the camera via usb to pc or tv screen. The buttons aren’t very easy to use as you need to touch a specific spot that isn’t highlighted in any way until you actually touch it - then you get a bright blue LED behind it.If however, you are ‘Technical’ minded and I’m sure also quite normal too, the details on the next picture are for you.

On the other hand, if you’re keen to record extremely high-quality, clear footage - for example, if you live in a busy town and are prone to encountering hazardous situations - then the extra cash isn't too much of a push. You can then relax knowing that you have evidence in the event of an accident or a fraudulent claim on your policy. So it was a pleasure to see that two separate journalists from The Independent wrote articles about the Dash Cam we sent them and, lo and behold, feedback was extremely positive. An option to copy to your computer would be beneficial for those users who want more control over their files. Night time picture quality is also very impressive, to the point, I have to apologise for my dirty windscreen, as the muck is actually on the inside, note to self … cleaning job to do. Next, I run the Car Power Cable from the powered suction mount behind the roof trim, door post trim, floor carpet and under centre console to the 12v socket all without any tools or difficulty, for me that is a surprise. I have solved the issue on other vehicles with the ferrite ring so worth trying that first as they’re cheap.

The magnet is quite strong, so you have to hold the mount to prevent the ball joint moving around as you pull the camera backwards. Choose the right amount of space to suit, we'd recommend starting off with 32GB and you can expand as you wish up to 128GB. The dash cam app acts as a personal storage point for all your recorded files, allowing you to easily share footage with your friends, the police or your insurer. Video quality is good across a range of lighting and weather conditions although the audio is a little quiet.

The advantage of a twin cam setup is that there is only one GPS enabled device and the recordings are all on the same SD card and can be displayed in sync on a suitable viewer.
