A Stephen King or a William Golding type would've had a lot of fun with the twist that comes along halfway through "The Island." Benchley, though, seems to be punching above his weight class. I think the premise would've worked better in another writer's hands. New mounds of seaweed pile up on the leeward beach. The island dries up and shrinks and tries to shake one off from itself.

Unsurprisingly, their vacation isn't a magic pill that suddenly transforms them into a happy family. It's actually pretty miserable for all involved. What I was most surprised with when reading about Spinalonga was the optimism embedded into the island. When I read the blurb of the novel, I wrongly assumed that Spinalonga was dominated by melancholy and disease. However, a community arose in Spinalonga. Cinemas, schools and a vibrant sense of life was created from the lepers, to make their life more bearable and occasionally even pleasant. The lepers travelled to Spinalonga isolated and alone, but Hislop is careful to include the family and community which was offered to the individuals on Spinalonga. I got tired of the chase in the bushland and I would have liked to have more details on the family living on the island and on Heather's past.

I’m stopping right here! Because after this impactful incident, things get escalated and Baxter find themselves into a nightmare! The islanders are so adamant to punish the outsiders who ruin their peaceful living! This is the story of the criminal treatment of asylum seekers and refugees by our “modern” and “civilized” countries. Told as a simple, moving allegory it challenges all of us to embrace compassion and speak up. Our fears, the author says, are normal. It’s what we do after that which defines our humanity.

Everything one has built and gathered must be carried farther up. Each day farther up. It’s as if paradise were about to sink into the sea—and one feels a mysterious desire to follow it. Alan Watts Interviews Laura Huxley: This Timeless Moment, YouTube. Archived from the original on 23 May 2013. Whaaat? That's incredibly rude to say to someone especially since she's the organizer of the conference that the husband is attending. But beyond being rude it's also terrible writing. A great cast of characters … a fantastic luxury beach setting and a twisty plot all make for a fabulous read’ Joy Kluver

The Baxter's have traversed the world from the US to Australia. While Tom attends a slew of medical conferences, his new young wife Heather will entertain his kids to the best of her abilities. A task made even more difficult given the children are reeling from the death of their mother. Understandably, they’re not nearly ready to accept Heather into their already made family. On the brink of a life-changing decision, Alexis Fielding longs to find out about her mother’s past. But Sofia has never spoken of it. All she admits to is growing up in a small Cretan village before moving to London. When Alexis decides to visit Crete, however, Sofia gives her daughter a letter to take to an old friend, and promises that through her she will learn more. September drifts into October, and the island becomes impassive and indifferent once again. The last fishing boats sail by into the night and vanish in the ocean with their lights. The forgotten possibility of life as a gift suddenly becomes thinkable. The fire burns in the stove. One curls up to sleep and recognizes the silence and makes friends with oneself. The plot is interesting enough to keep you engaged the whole way through. There's no time wasted. It's definitely channeling Australian Horror movie vibes. In fact, I thought of Wolf Creek a lot and it was even mentioned in the story!

When Heather and the kids are separated from Tom, they are forced to escape alone, seconds ahead of their pursuers. And for the very first time that winter, during my escape, I started, uncontrollably, to miss my island. The story starts with a mysterious man killing people in a boat. Of course, the killing continues – “the bodies keep piling” as the blurbs of pulp fiction thrillers like to proclaim.Short-listed for the Children's Book Council award this year, the front cover perfectly delivers the message of the book. This book was bonkers crazy characters a bit unrealistic but fast paced, I never want to go to the island!!! After an unfortunate accident, the O’Neils take possession of Heather and her family. It’s a fight for their lives as Heather takes charge to save her family. Will they make it off the island? pg 28) "I wanted the new Porsche Cayenne. I called about it last night," he said, trying to control his temper. "I'm sorry, sir, we don't have any in the lot. The customer before you got the last one. We have the Turbo or the E-Hybrid. The hybrid is our top Porsche rental, it's - " "No, thank you. It's a long drive. There is no way I would ever trust a hybrid!" If you have ever fancied the life of a pirate, Benchley might disabuse you of those desires. Their lives were brutal, with harsh penalties for any infraction of the arbitrary rules, and certainly the scurvy bastards that Maynard and his son encounter are indicative of the unpredictable and untrustworthy men you’d be sharing the life with.
