Description

Usually, you will not be able to eat for six hours before the scan but you will be able to drink water. Your appointment letter will tell you how to prepare for your scan. PET scanners work by detecting the radiation given off by a substance injected into your arm called a radiotracer as it collects in different parts of your body. are now the preferred method of reconstruction. These algorithms compute an estimate of the likely distribution of annihilation events that led to the measured data, based on statistical principles. The advantage is a better noise profile and resistance to the streak artifacts common with FBP, but the disadvantage is greater computer resource requirements. A further advantage of statistical image reconstruction techniques is that the physical effects that would need to be pre-corrected for when using an analytical reconstruction algorithm, such as scattered photons, random coincidences, attenuation and detector dead-time, can be incorporated into the likelihood model being used in the reconstruction, allowing for additional noise reduction. Iterative reconstruction has also been shown to result in improvements in the resolution of the reconstructed images, since more sophisticated models of the scanner physics can be incorporated into the likelihood model than those used by analytical reconstruction methods, allowing for improved quantification of the radioactivity distribution. [58] Research has shown that Bayesian methods that involve a Poisson likelihood function and an appropriate prior probability (e.g., a smoothing prior leading to total variation regularization or a Laplacian distribution leading to ℓ 1 {\displaystyle \ell _{1}} -based regularization in a wavelet or other domain), such as via Ulf Grenander's Sieve estimator [59] [60] Combined PET/CT scanners perform almost all PET scans today. These combined scans help pinpoint abnormal metabolic activity and may provide more accurate diagnoses than the two scans performed separately.

Positron emission tomography, also called PET imaging or a PET scan, is a type of nuclear medicine imaging. Kolata, Gina. "Promise Seen for Detection of Alzheimer's", The New York Times, June 23, 2010. Accessed June 23, 2010. Ruggiero, A.; Holland, J. P.; Hudolin, T.; Shenker, L.; Koulova, A.; Bander, N. H.; Lewis, J. The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. 52 (10): 1608–15. doi: 10.2967/jnumed.111.092098. PMC 3537833. PMID 21908391. The images can clearly show the part of the body being investigated, including any abnormal areas, and can highlight how well certain functions of the body are working. A PET scan can show how well certain parts of your body are working, rather than simply showing what they look like.

How PET scans work

Brain pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease greatly decrease brain metabolism of both glucose and oxygen in tandem. Therefore 18F-FDG PET of the brain may also be used to successfully differentiate Alzheimer's disease from other dementing processes, and also to make early diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease. The advantage of 18F-FDG PET for these uses is its much wider availability. Some 18F based radioactive tracers used for Alzheimer's include florbetapir, flutemetamol, PiB and florbetaben, which are all used to detect amyloid-beta plaques (a potential biomarker for Alzheimer's) in the brain.
