She has won the Anderson award 6 times (85, 89, 88, 92, 95, 2001), has been nominated twice for the Hans Christian Andersen Award and has won several more awards for children s literature in Italy. Then Smurfette comes by and scolds the young witch for changing one of Mother Nature's creations into a frog. From the New York Times bestselling author who brought us The Littlest Elf comes a sweet new Halloween story filled with gentle spooky fun and one adorable little witch friend! Brenda tries to explain her actions to Smurfette and the other Smurfs that she's trying to be an evil witch. When Hefty and Scaredy arrive with the songbird that turned into a frog, after Hefty says his line, he is also animated saying Scaredy's line.

When the oldest of the sisters displays some witchy characteristics, Asdrubale begins to hatch a diabolical scheme.

The unrefined free-hand pencil drawings that are more prevalent in pre-1980's children's books are wonderful to visit .

Which I feel in someway may also confuse younger readers (it is a small book so there isn’t much space to develop so many characters) – I also found that the names are all very similar too. After Miss Snarly departs, Papa Smurf says that they must rescue Scaredy, but tells Farmer that while he can reverse a little witch's spell, reversing a big witch's spell is more difficult. Even though things didn't go as planned, Wilma still found a way to be helpful and she couldn't have done it without her mummy friend Mae. As she moves through the community offering assistance to the other witches, her small size keeps sabotaging her efforts. Papa Smurf then has Scaredy climb a tree to get a fresh acorn, which he bravely does with Brenda watching and Smurfette telling her Papa Smurf's trying to teach Scaredy something for his own good.

She figures that if she can destroy "that little blue goody-goody", then it would truly be "a bat in her hat", and all she has to do is let them lead Brenda to their village for her instant fame and fortune. It’s more of a story book with illustrations than a standard picture book; it’s very text heavy, but it makes for a wonderful read aloud and also a good book for independent readers. She may be little, but Wilma knows this is the year she'll be able to fly with her family in the big broom-flying demonstration!
