It’s not insulated like Ooni Karu 12 or other Ooni pizza ovens hence the oven doesn’t retain the heat well.

The best portable wood-fired pizza ovenCooking has never been easier with this portable wood-fired pizza oven. This oven also comes with a pizza peel, stone, and deep dish included, which earnt another tick from us. In other words, the Big Horn is not really that efficient compared to other wood pellet ovens we’ve tested.

Note though that your pizza would take longer to cook if the dough is very thick and you put too much toppings on it. It all collapses down with foldable legs and removable chimney, pizzas cook in about 60 to 90 seconds. They mention that it works far better than expected, delivers consistent and reliable performance, and produces truly remarkable results. The only part that needs a tool is the pellet hopper which requires a screwdriver to fix it into place. One of my other neighbors has the Ooni Koda 16, and that is a kick *** oven (gas only, though, and SPENDY!There are people who convert to propane with this, but I'd stick with the pellets to get the full experience and flavour. I am the same – I love my Friday night (making the dough before making a home-cooked meal for my wife and I) then my Saturday afternoon making the tomato sauce base then prepping all the toppings for whatever everyone wants. You need to add pellets constantly (between each pizza), otherwise, the heat and flame will die down and the next pizza you put in the oven will get undercooked.

We had to make several adjustments like keeping the pizza a little flat (thin dough with fewer toppings), ensuring the dough was dry enough (less than 60% hydration), and adding some flour to the pizza peel. Luckily the process is pretty intuitive and mainly consists of sliding elements into place without needing tools. The Dome sits somewhere in between, with a modern look that's unlike many of the pizza ovens on the market, and a large enough internal capacity to keep the pizzas flowing.Molly is the Ecommerce Editor for Ideal Home, covering appliances including air fryers, vacuums and more. Caution is needed though while cleaning the interior of the Big Horn because some edges on the inside are sharp.

We probably put a lot of toppings which placed them closer to the flame, hence they got charred way too easily. As you’re putting it all together, note the handle which allows you to open and close the hopper and fire tray when they’re hot. This one we had to clean after cooking two pizzas to prevent the dough from sticking to the surface due to some burned-up leftover residue. The pizza was definitely delicious with the crust nice and crispy on the exterior and cooked all through. It also advises leaving a longer preheating window if using in winter, and the use of a thermometer to check that your oven is fully ready to go. I was stupid enough to be using this outside in a -30 Canadian winter, and left the unit outside overnight after I was done using it.
