While Kaur’s words lend themselves best to the Instagram format, where they perhaps live their best life, there’s something nice about looking at a physical blank page with only one line on it that says, “our pain is the doorway to our joy. She weaves in some more targeted responses to the resurgence of Black Lives Matter like “no one on this planet / is in more denial / than the white man / who … / still thinks racism and sexism / and all the world’s pain don’t exist. That being said, there were a few relatable poems that I screenshotted and I really respect Rupi’s vulnerability. Allison Jackson of The World, Jane Helpern of i-D and, literary scholar Anna Camilleri espoused similar notions in 2015.

Kaur’s verses use metaphors and similes that spatialize and give form to mind, body, and identity, helping to conceptualize how each plays a part in our emotions. Rupi’s reflections on moving from the unhealthy and to the healthy felt personal to me as I myself have experienced toxic relationships with friends. Her poetry at first received a lukewarm reception, having been told that she was too aggressive for certain venues or made some people uncomfortable. Instead of her writing about how she wants to be in the present over and over, how about describing the present around her. Kaur' poetry explores a small selection of themes alongside issues faced by Indian women and immigrants, female trauma and the " South Asian experience". Home Body by Rupi Kaur walks readers through a reflective and intimate journey visiting the past, the present, and the potential of the self. This book is a reminder that we all have flaws and they should not be feared or judged but seen as part of our individual stories. This book made me feel like she was speaking directly to me, and I knew that this would be the perfect book for me. What sets “home body” apart from Kaur’s previous collections is how it seems to settle on an origin story for the human condition — on a source for all our problems and our joys: “my mind / my body / and i. Home Body would make a wonderful gift for young women on your list, especially those who are struggling to overcome abuse or sexual assault, or simply struggling to find, to love, and to accept themselves in a world that consistently places unrealistic demands upon young women.

She alternately characterizes these elements as objects, imprinted upon by our experiences, or as individual beings with their own sense of agency. According to Kaur, she was an easy target for ridicule due to her outward appearance and vulnerability.

There were some poems scattered throughout that really spoke to me, but the majority of this felt unoriginal. Her response went viral, credited with bringing Kaur more followers and leading to the subsequent rise in popularity of her poetry. Instagram removed the image, in response to which Kaur wrote a viral critique of the company's actions.
