Description

Ethernet is a set of standards ( IEEE 802.3) which covers transmitting data via coaxial cable, twisted pairs as well as fibre. The SFP-10G-BX40D-I and SFP-10G-BX40U-I SFPs support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) functions according to the industry-standard SFF-8472 Multisource Agreement (MSA). This feature gives the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.

Using fiber SFP+ modules requires fiber cables for connection. However, the current access infrastructure is dominated by copper cabling. Deploying SFP+ fiber modules is costly in terms of upgrading the network base from copper to fiber. Though using fiber modules in copper cabling is possible, additional copper to fiber equipment such as media converters is required. The 10GBASE-T SFP+ module supports 10G-T transmission over the existing copper cabling infrastructure.However, they do exist as "Direct Attach Cables". In this form, the modules are attached to either end of the cable, and are not designed to be removed. The Cisco 10GBASE-ER module supports a link length of up to 40 kilometers on SMF (G.652). SFP-10G-ER-S does not support FCoE. Twisted-pair cables consist of two conductors of a single circuit twisted together, which reduce the effects of EMI and mutual interference between pairs and improve electromagnetic compatibility.
