Cara Hunter has a very unique writing style for the main characters and the added bonus of so much mixed media in her books.

My favourite feedback is when readers tell me it's like getting the raw material of the case, so they can be detectives themselves. There is no sign of the husband University professor, Michael Esmond, and efforts to locate him have proved fruitless. You can read these as standalones, but this installment is a little harder to get because it hasn’t been released in the US, so you have to get a foreign edition online. While there are no Twitter feeds or Facebook exchanges this time around, we see plenty of the vitriol you’d expect to see online through the comments sections of the various news articles that appear.

It could be read as a standalone novel, but to get most out of the characters, I recommend starting at the beginning, and believe me Close to Home and In the Dark are just as worthy as this one.

This third book in the series tackles the harrowing death of two children in a house fire over the Christmas period, with no sign of the parents - were the brothers death purely an awful tragedy or something even worse? It looks like the children were home alone, (there being no sign of their mother) and their father, who is attending a conference in London isn’t answering his phone. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Throughout the series, I couldn't really see the value he brought to the team other than creating drama.

The story starts with the details of a house fire in Oxford that completely destroys the Esmond family home and sees 2 children pulled from the wreckage. While it works well as a standalone mystery, No Way Out is, of course, best enjoyed as part of the Fawley series. Cara brings a wonderful cast of characters that are evolving within the series and we become engrossed in their lives and the interactions amongst themselves. The series goes from strength of strength, with each subsequent book building on the foundations laid by the previous volumes.Fawley and his wife have their own separate horrors and within their relationship, they deal with the tragedy as individuals rather than a partnership. It's a device which can go wrong - and normally I don't like it - but it works well here and allows a lot of red herrings to grow to full size. No Way Out is the third book in the series and, fortunately for those of us who claim to be fans – this series seems to get better and better as it goes on. Summary: It's the third book in the series but reads perfectly well as a standalone, as I found out.

What makes this tragedy even worse is that all the evidence points to the fire having been started deliberately. The mood of the story is managed sensitively with the distressing realisation that a child has died and the harrowing discoveries that are still to come.

She goes above and beyond when drafting report excerpts, blogs, transcripts, etc to create an authentic feel for the reader. As with the previous books in this series interspersed within the narrative are media reports of the initial fire and subsequent discoveries along with the related reader comments, official police and pathology reports, as well as flashbacks to periods prior to the fire which gives us an insight into the mindsets of Samantha and Michael and certain events in the months leading up to that fateful night.
