Description

Approximately 10,000 commercial software titles were made for the Commodore 64 including development tools, office applications, and games. The machine is also credited with popularising the computer demo scene. The Commodore 64 is still used today by some computer hobbyists, and emulators allow anyone with a modern computer to run these programs on their desktop. One of the toughest thing about this game is dodging bullets from the one-hit-kill guns. Yeah, Double Dragon has golden gun style firepower! The VIC-40 was renamed C64 during the presentation to fit the current Commodore business products lineup, which contained the P128 and the B256, both named by a letter and their respective memory size. The original PET version was very similar to the original Microsoft implementation with few modifications. BASIC 2.0 on the C64 was also similar, and was also seen on C128s (in C64 mode) and other models. Later PETs featured BASIC 4.0, similar to the original but adding a number of commands for working with floppy disks. Some of you might have played the NES version of this game which is a lot easier than the C64 version. Unfortunately, this port doesn’t have any cool tunes or a controller available to use, but it’s one of the originals and a proper C64 gem that HAS to be in your collection.

The native number format of Commodore BASIC, like that of its parent MS BASIC, was floating point. Most contemporary BASIC implementations used one byte for the characteristic ( exponent) and three bytes for the mantissa. The accuracy of a floating point number using a three-byte mantissa is only about 6.5 decimal digits, and round-off error is common. 6502 implementations of Microsoft BASIC utilized 40-bit floating point arithmetic, meaning that variables took five bytes to store (four byte mantissa and one byte for the exponent) unlike the 32-bit floating point found in BASIC-80. The machine is also credited with popularizing the computer demo scene. Furthermore, the VICE software program (Versatile Commodore Emulator) gave the best experience running the C64 microcomputer functions. The C64 8-bit home computer is still in use today, and it’s possible to run on windows through the WinVICE emulator. However, Commodore 64 ended its production on 29 April 1994. The popular Commodore 64 came with BASIC v2.0 in ROM even though the computer was released after the PET/CBM series that had version 4.0 because the 64 was intended as a home computer, while the PET/CBM series were targeted at business and educational use where their built-in programming language was presumed to be more heavily used. This saved manufacturing costs, as the V2 fit into smaller ROMs. Expression bug: ""+-1 in any context either crashes the system or exits the program unexpectedly. (all versions) On Commodore systems BASIC is not only used as a programming language, but also as operating "shell", or environment. The operating system and BASIC was stored on a ROM (Read Only Memory) chip.

Commodore BASIC 2.0 is used instead of the more advanced BASIC4.0 from the PET series, since C64 users were not expected to need the disk-oriented enhancements of BASIC4.0. The company did not expect many to buy a disk drive, and using BASIC2.0 simplified VIC-20 owners' transition to the 64. [78] "The choice of BASIC2.0 instead of 4.0 was made with some soul-searching, not just at random. The typical user of a C64 is not expected to need the direct disk commands as much as other extensions, and the amount of memory to be committed to BASIC were to be limited. We chose to leave expansion space for color and sound extensions instead of the disk features. As a result, you will have to handle the disk in the more cumbersome manner of the 'old days'." [79]
