If you’re a skincare lover—or if you just have eyeballs—you’ve probably noticed the recent trend in vitamin- filled skincare, each new product promising to totally transform your face. And the latest obsession? Good ole vitamin E, something you’ve definitely heard of before but most likely have no idea WTF it actually does. Moisturizers are typically formulated to meet the needs of specific skin types, so thinking about your skin type is a good place to start. Having a rich and balanced diet is the best way to ensure our bodies are receiving the right amounts of vitamin E that it needs. Here’s a few ways you can increase your vitamin E intake; select I tried out the Solawave LED light therapy mask for a month, and here are my thoughts How to shop for vitamin E We tested the Aroamas Scar Professional Silicone Scar Sheets on a four-year-old scar on our face where the skin was damaged enough to prohibit hair growth in that area. While it was a little awkward to cut the sheets down to the appropriate size for a facial scar (and we couldn’t leave the sheets on 24/7, as recommended) we were still impressed with the results we saw.

Seafood is a popular source of vitamin E, so adding fish such as salmon and cod to your diet can be an easy way to improve your vitamin E intake. At least one study has linked topical vitamin E to a reduction in psoriasis symptoms. Even better, the study showed that there were no serious side effects. Okay, so technically, anything might cause acne depending on your skin type. Fun! Yay! But when it comes to vitamin E, it really depends on the formulation, so the goal is to find the right formula for your skin type. Dr. Brazzo says that the actual form of the treatment you choose isn’t that important (aside from choosing the right product for the right body part).

Baumann, L. S., & Spencer, J. (1999, April). The effects of topical vitamin E on cosmetic appearance of scars [Abstract]. Dermatologic Surgery, 25(4), 311-315 Ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid make great additions to facial moisturizers. “Ceramides are an excellent ingredient incorporated in moisturizers to protect the skin,” says Zubritsky. “These fatty acids help support the skin’s barrier to seal in moisture and keep out harmful elements.”

The best scar treatment on the market won’t do much for you if it’s not compatible with the part of the body you want to use it on. While silicone patches or strips can be effective treatments, helping to keep the wound moist and reducing surface tension on the wound, Dr. Brazzo says they typically don’t work well for your face or jointed parts of the body that are always moving (like your knee or elbow, for example). If the scar you’re treating is on your face or one of these highly mobile areas, Dr. Brazzo says you will be better off with a topical product you can apply a few times per day. For people who need their skin to be less dry and itchy, vitamin E seems to do a good job of that,” she says. Use a product that contains vitamin E But don’t replace your sunscreen with vitamin E oil. Two types of UV light damage the skin: ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). Because the scar we tested with these sheets was more than four years old, we were impressed when they improved both the pigmentation and texture of the scar—especially since we only wore the sheets at night while we slept. However, it was pretty uncomfortable for us to keep them on for the recommended 24 hours a day, so keep that in mind. You'll often find vitamin E paired with another skin-loving nutrient, vitamin C. The reason for that is because vitamin E "works synergistically with vitamin C to provide UVB protection," David Kim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, explains. While vitamin E alone can provide some level of protection against damage caused by free radicals, it's much more effective when combined with vitamin C, and a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology further proves this point. Folk wisdom has long suggested that vitamin E, applied to the skin, taken as a supplement, or both, might treat scars, or prevent them from forming in the first place. But research does not support this claim and has found no association between vitamin E use and scar prevention. Pereira, G. G., Detoni, C. B., Balducci, A. A more recent literature review found that evidence about whether vitamin E improved or worsened scarring was inconclusive. According to board certified dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, FAAD, moisturizers can benefit the skin in a few different ways. “A hydrating product draws moisture into the top layers of the skin,” she says. Dr. Rapaport credits the cream’s effectiveness to ingredients like hyaluronic acid, onion extract, and peptides, which she says have all been shown to minimize the appearance of scars and enhance the texture of the skin. Plus, she notes that allowing your skin to absorb the nutrients in the cream overnight aids in its ability to leave you with a healthier, more even complexion. She also recommends acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid, which work well to reduce oil on the skin. “If you have oily or acne-prone skin, consider finding a moisturizer that is lightweight and noncomedogenic, like a hyaluronic acid-based gel formulation,” she says.to 4.7 stars: These scar creams are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them. that is, or may reasonably be considered to be submitted in extreme volumes and as such be deemed as ‘spam’;When a large area of skin is damaged and has to join together again in the healing process, it can create a scar that not only feels tight but can cause problems with your muscles and tendons. These scars often require surgical intervention, so you should see a dermatologist if you’re interested in treating a contracture scar. Type of vitamin E: There are different forms of vitamin E, but alpha-tocopherol is the best one to look for on ingredient lists. It’s the most common form found in skin, and therefore “the ideal form,” says Graf.
