Warner Bros.’ new Mad Max Anthology marks the first time Mad Max 2 (known as The Road Warrior in the US) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome have been issued in 4K. The first film hit 4K last year, courtesy of Kino Lorber, while the latest installment, Mad Max: Fury Road, has been available in the format since 2016.

Mad Max: The Road Warrior is a huge step up from the Blu-ray in terms of image quality, a real stark improvement. Detail is fantastic, the grime on the cars, the rips in leather, scruffy hair, the tarmac on the road, sand grains, whips of vegetation in the desert; stunning stuff. The HDR and WCG really push the image, colours are rich, bold and vivid, everything looks hot, flesh tones are tanned, sand is red, explosions singe your eyebrows, and again the blue skies are amazing. Blu-ray and DVD sets. Obviously, that also means the various extras created for Kino's 4K edition and Shout Factory's Blu-ray were not licensed either. The film opens with an extended chase sequence involving a drugged-out thrill seeker being pursued by police and ends in not one, For purists, the corrected DTS-HD 2.0 theatrical audio on The Road Warrior (and now lossless 2.0 theatrical audio on BeyondIn retrospect, Beyond Thunderdome is an underrated entry in the series. It may not have as much non-stop action as other installments, but its heart contains some nice thoughts on the nature of family, which is an obvious sub-text running through all the Mad Max films. The Road Warrior is the only disc in this collection with any bonus content whatsoever, adding an enjoyable mid-length of the legacy bonus features are missing in action. It's a fine solution if you've already got the Blu-rays and want a sleek, no-nonsense 4K upgrade (oryou watch the extras on the Fury Road Blu-ray, it's obvious that the film's flame effects are a combination of practical and CG, but on Mad Max features the same primary options as Kino's 4K edition: a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio remix and the original 2.0 mono theatrical mix. Of bigger concern are the few nighttime sequences where the grain is suddenly heavier and more pronounced due to the low-lighting conditions, namely the scene of Max sneaking out the compound to his Ford Falcon in the middle of the night. As part of the restoration effort, it appears digital noise reduction (DNR) was applied to the scene and excessively so. The scene now appears much-too smooth, sterile and somewhat flat, which when combined with the aforementioned inherent softness of the photography, also makes the action seem rather waxen. Thankfully, this is neither a problem with the rest of the video nor as egregious in other nighttime scenes, but it's bad enough to bring the overall quality down a few notches.
