Description

Traditional gouache is opaque, matte watercolour – so like watercolour it is re-soluble, not water resistant. It’s too bad that pencil doesn’t really do well on top of the Acryla Gouache. Because I love adding a few details with pencil to every painting I make. You can use pencil over the paint but it doesn’t have the effect as with normal gouache.

Holbein acrylic gouache is technically an acrylic paint (acrylic polymer emulsion, a type of plastic binder that seals pigment like glue or varnish would) but there are differences between "acrylic gouache" and just "matte acrylic". HAG's flow/disperse rate in wet wash, as well as the matte finish once dried, has a similar feel and appearance to a water-soluble gouache (like those made using a re-wettable gum arabic or dextrin based binder). Holbein Acrylic Gouache Formerly "Acryla" - Matte Paint Review, Color Chart, Lightfast Test, Pigment Info Being used to normal gouache, Acryla Gouache isn’t a far stretch. I do feel the colours are much brighter than my gouache sets (Lascaux and Winsor&Newton) and they dry up in a beautiful matte way. The paints feels more dry on my brush while painting compared to regular gouache. That way you can get a dry brush effect which I like a lot. But if you dip your brush in water, you get a beautiful smooth effect without losing too much colour. Firstly, the texture of the paints was very smooth and fluid, thinner in consistency than the buttery, heavy body acrylics. This made them very easy to use undiluted but I was concerned that this would mean that they wouldn’t be as opaque as I would like. I was pleasantly surprised that when not thinned down with water, they were very opaque, which really opens up possibilities when painting, such as adding highlights and details towards the end. You can see from my test that the white and yellow were slightly less opaque but a further layer of paint would sort that out.

Pearl Colours: These effect colours have a refined pearlescent lustre. The last 6 pearl colours are “interference” tones which are translucent and will vary in appearance depending on ground colour and viewing angle. When you have all colour swatches done you know how each paint works. Some have more pigment, some are more opaque and of course: the colour are quite different from the colour on the tubes.

Metallic Colours: A series of metallic shades which are slightly more translucent than the regular colours, giving a sense of luminance and depth to your painting. Some traditional (gum Arabic-based) gouaches add minerals like chalk to create a physical barrier to light refraction. The colours are the brightest I have ever seen! I love how they dry up on paper and even layering over dark parts works perfectly. In that regard, these paints are quite extraordinary. Judith sent me the Holbein Acryla Gouache set with 102 tubes. It’s the most extensive and expensive set available. This big box is filled with all the colours an illustrator can dream of. It also has a nice range of fluorescent and metallic colours. What is Acryla Gouache?Holbein Acrylic Gouache is an opaque and highly-pigmented acrylic paint which dries to a velvety-matte finish. The colours are very popular with designers and artists, who love their superb quality.

Greyish Colours: A range of elegant “greyish” pastel colours, perfect for subtle expression. Quiet tones that can be used without making your work too dark or murky. The results suggest that the reason the paint is so rich and matt is that it has a very high pigment load in relation to the amount of binder. This is good news unless you wish to add loads of water and stretch the binder too far as there isn’t a lot and the pigment may be left unbound. I also tried an application of matt spray varnish over the top and that sealed everything permanently. I used 2 thin coats of Golden MSA spray varnish matt to keep the matt surface finish.

Holbein and Turner brands are the most popular and truly unique of the acrylic gouache hybrid paints. There are other "acrylic gouache" titled paints out there that are not as nice (Liquitex has a mostly semi-opaque, lesser pigment load, not fully matte version that I do not recommend). Most others like Lascaux, Jo Sonja, Amsterdam and cheap craft acrylics/decoart/americana/applebarrel just make "matte acrylic" which does not disperse as easily in wet washes. Golden's So Flat is a high quality matte acrylic that can be used a similar way, but more of their selection is semi-opaque than Holbein or Turner. All in all, I’m really pleased with these paints and I am looking forward to make many more illustrations with them. Japanesque Colours: This selection of beautiful, sophisticated tones are formulated with fine powders which give them a unique slightly gritty, textured matt finish. To protect the painting made with Holbein acryla, the brand recommends using regular varnish like for acrylic paint. Toxicity With head offices in Osaka Japan, Holbein Artist Colours was formed over 120 years ago, and took the name of the much revered European artist Hans Holbein in the 1930s. From that time, Holbein’s presence has been significant, not only in Southeast Asia, but also in North America, Australia and Europe. Holbein colour chemists, using only the finest pigments available, have achieved the highest standards of quality control in the industry, working to precise standards at each stage of the manufacturing process. The result is unerring consistency from production run to production run. Holbein are unique in the art material trade because they do not produce any entry level/student quality colour products; each of their colour ranges is adapted to meet the special requirements of the professional/serious artist with permanence, brilliance, and technique in mind. I have done tests with the Turner Acryl Gouache and found that if it is really diluted to a watery wash, then it doesn’t have enough binder left to be waterproof, it is stretched too thin. Although this is the case with all acrylics it seems it is even more so with the Turner. This led me to think that perhaps the Turner Acryl Gouache is super-loaded with pigment in relation to the amount of acrylic binder. I am doing more tests while in isolation to see if I am right. I will be comparing the dilution of 4 kinds of acrylic – heavy body, fluid, ink and acryl gouache acrylics – to see when they stop being waterproof.Simple Swatch Card Rubber Stamp for Watercolor, Ink, Acrylic, Marker, Pencil.
