While we have all heard of topics like human trafficking or prostitution, it is daunting to read such an in-depth depiction into the sordid mess that it is. Embora no início tenha tido alguma dificuldade em interiorizar que Belle era uma menina inocente e ingénua de 15 anos e que até essa idade nunca se tinha apercebido que vivia num bordel que a sua mãe geria! E isto porque as atitudes, a postura, a própria forma como se expressa depois de ter percebido tudo e da pior forma possível (testemunhando o assassínio de uma das raparigas da casa), não se coadunam com uma menina inocente de 15 anos, pareceram-me mais atitudes de uma jovem adulta já com alguma maturidade! Pearse fell flat by not leveraging the colorful era/ locales instead you really couldn't tell when or where it was until a character told you.If you're looking for an easy read, a story where you can root for the main character and a lighter version of a prostitution story then Belle is your book. This all changes when she finds herself the only witness to a brutal murder, she is snatched from the street and her 'education' into the dark, violent underworld of prostitution and crime begins. Convicted and sentenced to be transported to Australia, she endures horrific conditions aboard ship before landing in a brutal and barbaric country. Não quero com isto dizer que é um mau livro, mas dada a sua classificação por aqui e a potencialidade do tema, soube-me a pouco.
