Fulk, Alan and Geoffrey are truly appreciable characters who genuinely love and respect Simon, even King Henry (the son) for that matter. Fulk for all his roaring and calling names is a softie at heart and Alan is really sweet. Our love for this author does not blind us to her faults. Almost every Georgette Heyer is readable and engaging, even those that veer into the formulaic. But there are a few elements in her novels that are likely to trouble the contemporary reader. I can tell you what should be wrong with the books - at the most basic level, there's an awful lot of tell rather that show and a severely bad case of written medieval dialogue. But I didn't care. I was taken by

By 1940, Heyer became disillusioned with her early work and asked that six of her books including Simon the Coldheart no longer be published. In 1975, a year after her death, Georgette Heyer's son, Sir Richard Rougier, was asked to reconsider his mother's wishes regarding Simon the Coldheart. and allowed further reprints. [2] Plot summary [ edit ] You have it wrong,' Beauvallet said, jesting. ‘Mad Nicholas is the name they call me. I make you free of it, señora.' When I read Faro’s Daughter the other day, which she apparently wrote in a month, I enjoyed it so much that when I finished the book I read it again straight away with undiminished pleasure. Deb Grantham is a sensational female. Who could not fall in love with her.

Two men went staggering aside, spun apart by an iron hand on the shoulder of each. The lady looked fearfully into the face of El Beauvallet. The foremost of the invaders stood in an amazed stare, but recovered before those behind him might push forward. ‘A wench!' he cried on a coarse laugh. ‘A rare wench, as I live!'

Fulk comes to love Simon as much as he loves his son, the romantic poet Alan. Rather than being jealous, Alan also adores Simon (I swear I kept hearing that old meme Ummmmm....enjoyable reading and I really liked a lot of the secondary characters, but Simon really was a bore. His half-brother Geoffrey, friend Alan, even King Henry are more likable and interesting. Geoffrey's romance had me in stiches of smiles. But Simon got boring after a while. So, what kind of book is this, really? I'd call it Historical Adventure, along the lines of Robin Hood, Zorro, Sabatini's books, and other early tales of chivalry. Not for readers who have strict ideas about how a romance should unfold, (What? It's Chapter Two and they haven't jumped into bed? How can they call this a Romance??? lol) I do recommend it to readers who are interested in a different type of historical novel. When Dona Dominica sets sail on the Santa Maria, she wonders if she will ever meet the infamous El Beauvallet, the English pirate with a reputation of being able to do anything because of witchcraft. But she does not expect her ship to be taken by him, Nor does she expect to be kidnapped by him and taken abord his ship the Venture.

It was frustrating from a feminist perspective because even though both Simon and Margaret have overpowering feelings for each other, Margaret's passion led her to happily compromise all her most important goals and priorities, while it only led Simon to commit a single tactical error he later regretted. But in the end, this was a novel written in the 1920's about a couple in the 1420's. I suppose bringing a woman to heel was the happy ending everyone was looking for. Though I enjoyed the plot well enough, Margaret/Simon annoyed me excessively. I liked the secondary characters and plot, that is what made this book for me. Don Manuel was shaken, and ashen pale. He spoke breathlessly. ‘I demand instantly to see the commander!'
