above all it is the sense of wild nature , woods of holm oak, beech, chestnut and pine, with the river running through them and the threat of heavy rain haging above, that she captures so bewitchingly .While I could feel sympathy for some of the characters in Trespass, I really didn’t like any of them, other than Mélodie, a little girl we meet in the first chapter and then don’t see again for about two hundred pages or so.

A garden designer enjoying a late-flourishing love affair with Kitty, a mediocre watercolourist in southern France, Veronica has admitted few passions into her life aside from Susan, the horse which mitigated the miseries of her childhood, but Anthony is one of them; and when he decides that what will transform his old age is a splendid house in the Cévennes, Veronica throws herself into making his sketchy dreams a reality. Tremain’s books have helped her win some prestigious literary awards, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Baileys Women’s Prize, the Prix Femina Etranger, the Orange Prize, the Giles Cooper Award, the Whitbread Award, etc. One day Audrun decides to visit him, bringing him a branch of white cherry blossom which they both remember as a positive memory from when they were children. They become afraid to share their feelings and passion as they once did, suspicious that Anthony is on the other side of the door or the wall listening to them. Thanks to my dear friend Jana, I was able to enjoy this book on audio, read by the fantastic actress Juliet Stephenson who is fast becoming one of my favourite audio book narrators. French rural setting, a rich cast of diverse characters all equipped with their own emotional back-story. Tremain's extraordinary imagination has produced a powerful, unsettling novel in which two worlds and cultures collide.
