The main red armour panels were done just like the jetbike, and the cloths and metallics were done the same way too. There’s more to painting the Adeptus Custodes than just spraying your models down with Retributor Armor spray – though that’s certainly an option if you want to save time. We’ll look at several different methods for painting them here. Crab-Stuffed Mushroom’s Method Caracalla has more accents than most custodes, but I’ll go through an abbreviated method for all of them: To sum up: the only valid way to do paint compatibility charts is with actual physical samples, either by eyeballing or with colorimeter (if you have samples side by side you can utilize digital camera with RAW mode as a colorimeter). All other tools are very limited novelty. Finally, I painted the rim of the base with Steel Legion Drab and added some dark brown static grass. If you want to go for grey base trims like on the Studio models, use Stormvermin Fur instead.

Drukhari tend to be an “antagonist faction” in 40k fiction; they certainly make good villains, after all – but have had the opportunity to take center stage a few times.

Spot Highlight the armor (gold and leadbelcher parts) with Stormhost Silver (try to ‘dot’ the edges of the armor only – less is more)! Once I’ve finished the legs off I drybrush the bottom areas with a light dusting of Celestra Grey. This blends Abaddon into the base and gives him a much more weathered appearance. When I took on Custodes I was happy that the person who I painted them for wanted something other than the classic gold. As much as I love a really nice rich gold colour, I find it pretty overwhelming on the Custodes models. Instead, I went for a striking red-dominated scheme, with darker bronze metallics. The goal here is to make sure the undersides are the parts being highlighted, which is kind of the reverse from how you’d normally do it. Just think about where the light is coming from as you do this. I also did a blend of Evil Sunz Scarlet and Fire Dragon bright into the gold trim surrounding the head. Thin layers of Basalt Grey were used to blend the shadows and highlights, smoothing the transitions.

That is actually quite perfect! Although she doesn't really go over what colors she is using while painting and the video is veeeery long Following the basecoat, I go into my first shade. For my shade, I use Guilliman Flesh Contrast Paint thinned down about 2:1 with Contrast Medium . In retrospect, I think this left the shade a bit too light and I had to hit some areas an extra time, so a 1:1 mix would also probably work. http://www.ttfxmedia.com/vallejo/cgi-bin/_modelis_info.asp?p1=ing&p2=modelcolor&p3=1#modelcolorinfo GW's new range matches with the old range are the matches claimed by GW. However, many of the paints do not match very closely at all and some mixing will be required to get close to the original colours. If you are trying to match old GW with new GW, you'd be better just getting Vallejo game color or coat d'arms for the closest match )

For my Drukhari, I wanted to make clear that these are three separate subfactions who cooperate, and that they aren’t really a single army. To that end, I chose some color schemes that stand out next to one another, but have a coherent threat that joins them together. Something like leather can be a bit stronger, if it’s a new leather anyway. So, I’ll work it up to a mid-level grey for the highlight with a stronger mid-tone color. It helps to paint your heads separately no matter what you do, but this is especially important for your skin, because you don’t want to get flesh tones on your nice finished armor color. For the flesh tones, I wanted something a bit greyer and more inhuman than your standard Cadian Fleshtone. I go into more detail in the HTPE: Human Skin article, but for Caracalla, the skin is VGA Dwarf Skin mixed with a mid/slightly dark grey. To highlight, I mixed in more of the dwarf skin, though the entire color range I used has a good proportion of grey in it. Instead of a flesh wash, I used diluted nuln oil to wash the skin. Today I’m glad to present an extensive tutorial in 33 easy to follow steps. Create an atmospheric and effective paint scheme that is suitable for anything Nighthaunt from the lowly Chainrasp to the most dreadful Mortarch.
