I would not recommend this book to women who have just had a baby and who might be having a difficult time.

The Other Mother by Rachel M. Harper | Goodreads

Of course you don’t understand,” she said, raising the stone with the hole in it to her eye. “You’re just a bad copy she made of the crazy old man upstairs.” Completely disagree with other reviewers who thought it needed more content on the experience of being a non biological mother. I really feel that a large part of being a non biological mother is just being a mother. Because at the end of the day, motherhood is motherhood.I am a fan of the book you don’t understand until the final twist, the book you have to read three times in a row to understand. This is reminiscent of “Shutter Island”, “A Cure for Wellness”, and I dunno, some other crazy books. We follow Daphne, who has brought her child with her away from her husband, to begin working as an archivist for her favorite author. However, Daphne is using false credentials from a mother she befriended in their post-partum mommies group. Forgotten the title or the author of a book? Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. Visit BookSleuth THE OTHER MOTHER is not something I normally read. It actually was a bit bizarre, dark, and tense for me, but the twists and turns in the storyline and the pull-you-in writing kept me reading. Daphne (a former children librarian) is eager to get away from her controlling husband and establish a life on her own. She applies for a new job as an archivist with a famous author, Schuyler Bennett in the Catskills--under Laurel's name and credentials! She gets the job. She takes her baby and together, they help the author, (who also happens to be the daughter of the former medical director/psychiatrist of Crantham Mental Institution), organize old papers and write a memoir.

I did enjoy Brister’s snide comments on preachy parents and mumfluencers- as an absolute cynic, I’m here for that! I think the writing was very good and the flow was a bit off here and there. I had to re-read a few paragraphs and sentences a few times to just make sure I understood where things were going. This book is so heartbreaking at times. You get to see how Michael's relationship with his mother has changed. You also get to see what was going on with his relationship with his father before he passed too. There's a lot of missing puzzle pieces that don't make sense until you get to the end of the book. I love the way this story is told in a chapter from each person in Jenry’s life. The novel is full of reflective thought underscored by love about what makes a family and how hurtful actions are taken in the name of love. It is a beautifully written book.A number of other details arguably reinforce this theory, such as her parents suddenly changing, while some on Reddit have noted that the well resembles the tunnel to the other world and the garden in the real world eerily looks like the Beldam. Thirdly, as I read, I hoped that the protagonist's broken family would get a happy ending. They do but I found it too sweet and unrealistic. Eight grader, Michael, is struggling with his mental health. The book starts with Michael saying his mother has been replaced with a replica who acts and sounds like his mother but is not his mother. No one else around him notices that this other mother is not the Michael's mother. Michael has ADD and behavioural issues. His dad passed away two years ago and he hates his new stepfather. The job's location was not the best place to be with her paranoia and the history of the mansion. Odd things would happen and strange sounds would occur that had Daphne second guessing her leaving. How Billie took over the caregiving of her daughter to the point of obsession was very strange.

Thank you to the author, Carol Goodman, the publisher, HarperCollins, and Edelweiss + for an advanced reader copy of The Other Mother. The other people in the corridor—three children, two adults—were somehow too insubstantial to touch the door. But their hands closed about hers, as she pulled on the big iron door handle, and suddenly she felt strong. Miss. Forcible and Miss. Spink are elderly actresses and Coraline’s eccentric neighbors who live in Coraline’s world. The two of them are lovers and they spend most of their lives with their many terriers reminiscing their days from the stage. Miss. Forcible and Miss. Spink agrees that Coraline is “a remarkable young woman” but does not bother to learn her real name, as they keep calling her “Caroline.” The problem for me started with the audio book. One of the narrators I began to have a real issue with and her reading highlighted what became a sore spot for me in the text, which was specifically the dialogue. It began to lean into near melodrama at times, characters wearing their hearts on their sleeves, especially at emotionally charged moments which increased in frequency as the book progressed. Michael misses his father, suffering from anger management issues, seeing school therapist, standing up to school’s bullies, taking care of his siblings even though he hardly stands their quirky antics and collecting money to pay his debt to his stepfather.

She walked into the drawing room and looked at the door. She had the feeling that the door was looking at her, which she knew was silly, and knew on a deeper level was somehow true." The Other Mother is a beautiful and emotional trip inside the heart and mind of a 14 year old boy who frankly has a lot going on. Michael's story sometimes seems extraordinary but then again when you really think about it, it's not so much. Does he have more on his plate than some kids? Absolutely. But his thoughts and feelings are just like pretty much any teenager. This is brilliantly written coming of age story from a young boy’s perspective. There are some things a little bothered me: I wanted to know more about Michael’s father to understand his grief process and how his loss changed his family’s life completely. It could be a little longer so I can spend more time in Michael’s head for deeply connecting with him. A really interesting examination of familial love hngnhghgghgnghgh my emotions. Micheal's family is not perfect, and it's hard and he's resentful but he still loves them. As Grunkle Stan said, "It's just like my life.....in a way."Carol Goodman hooked me years ago with her debut, THE LAKE OF DEAD LANGUAGES, about a girls' boarding school and the unsavory things going on there. And then I was mesmerized by THE GHOST ORCHID and still have images from that book lodged in my mind. So when THE OTHER MOTHER (William Morrow, March 27 2018) came to my attention, I knew I had to read it.
