If you do come across a wet ethernet cable, you really have two choices: leave it unplugged whilst it is left to dry out naturally or simply replace the cable. One less obvious thing to consider is what sort of cable construction you want. Most Ethernet cable consists of stranded, shielded wires inside a flexible plastic casing, which is easy to wind up and move around. However, solid-core cable is less susceptible to interference and offers slightly better performance. It’s less flexible, but if you’re running cable inside a wall it’s a good choice. On a more serious note, some regions are significantly more affected by frequent lightning strikes than others. Using the Internet, find out if your area is in a high risk zone. If so, then any outdoor Ethernet cable is at risk whether above ground or buried. Generally, Ethernet cable that is not buried and does not span structures is at lower risk for lightning strikes, so this is less of an issue. A great example of this type of installation is Ethernet cable used for IP surveillance cameras that are all attached to the same structure. That said, it does not hurt to use ESD protection regardless. Better safe than sorry. Also offering a maximum length of 50 feet, the Veetop Flat Cat7 ethernet cable is here to take your wired internet usage to a whole new level. With a maximum internet speed of 10 Gbps, this impressive category 7 cable can handle all of your home or business internet needs without stretching your budget too far. A question that often comes up is “should I use only shielded cable outside”? The short answer is no. The longer answer is “it depends on the environment”. The purpose of cable shielding is to ward off EMI/RFI or ESD. The shielding, usually in the form of foil referred to as FTP (Foil Twisted Pair), will be accompanied by a ESD ground/drain wire as well. Generally, I recommend using unshielded cabling unless there is a valid need for shielded, such as when burying the cable within 8” of electrical wire on parallel runs. The other primary reason to use shielded is for ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) drain off such as when running outdoor Ethernet cable above ground in structure-to-structure scenarios. ESD build up occurs with dry air movement across cabling, and could ruin your network equipment if not allowed to discharge to ground.

When you are selecting an exterior wall to drill through, you need to consider several factors. You need to know the location of electrical wires, pipes and plumbing and any other essential services that run through your walls. If you damage any of these services during outdoor ethernet cable installation, you may end up spending far more money on repairs. That being said, I would still recommend using the exterior-grade cable over the interior-grade cable and conduit combination. Depending on the weather conditions you receive, it may be worth using a conduit even alongside the exterior-grade cable. This may mean changing the way in which the cable is ultimately run, but it is worth it when you consider how the interference could affect the long-term use of the cable and you may end up having to dig up the conduit anyway when you come to replace the faulty cable.

An indoor Ethernet cable is primarily used for connecting devices to a network inside a building. Because of the nature of the cable, it is designed to be used in areas not subjected to harmful outdoor conditions. Finding the best outdoor ethernet cable for a garden building can be difficult with so many options available. Lots of terminologies can make it hard to compare products.Installing a wired internet connection into a garden building can be daunting if you are not familiar with networking. Thankfully, the installation is fairly simple and can be completed within a few hours. Are you at risk for a lightning strike? Technically speaking, we all are. Just ask the poor golfer who chose to golf at the wrong time…. yikes!
