A convertible oven formed by inverting the lid. This makeshift oven includes the lid’s inbuilt thermostat for regulating the temperature. It can be used for roasting, heating, and baking food. Most of our cooking surfaces are supplied with a ‘CADAC GreenGrill coating’. This ceramic coating is made from organic materials and doesn’t contain any toxic substances. If you’re not short on space when travelling or intend on regularly using your BBQ at home in the garden or on the terrace, opt for a refillable gas bottle. Any type of Butane or Propane bottle is appropriate (Weight by kg). Our main gripe is with the windshield/lid, which is held in place by one very small catch that slips into a tiny groove. Why they didn’t put one on the other side to make the lid less wobbly, we’ve no idea. It tends to give the cooker an unstable feel. If you typically camp with a mains electric hookup then it might be worth splashing out for an induction hob. Our favourite is the Aobosi Dual Induction Hob which can boil two pints of water in about 3 minutes – this is up there with some of the best kettles.

You can also use the lid as a windshield; this way the gas flame does not blow out while cooking. After use, you can close the lid again with the handy closing clip. It worked well for us, but we’d prefer to use a separate toasterthan the small grill. This one uses bottled gas, so you’ll need a hose and connector (see the guide at the end of the article). Add the rest ofthe veg and keep it moving. When everything’s cooked (but not mushy), shake your jar and pour the dressing over – not all at once, you might want to save some for adding while you eat. Serve after a few seconds of warming through. They have the big advantage of being refillable. You don’t refill them yourself, though. You take the empty bottle to a store and they swap it for a full one.

Campingaz vs Cadac

Even more inefficient than alcohol are the solid fuel stoves which typically use hexamine tablets. We don’t really recommend these stoves for more than novelty value, as it takes more than one tablet to even boil 1 litre of water. There’s also no way of controlling the power of the flame, so it’s a case of lifting the pan away from it to cook/boil less – not ideal! Gorgeous and creamy and fishy and smoky all at once. Delicious with crusty bread and a green salad on the side. Our LP (low pressure) barbecues run off either Butane or Propane, which regulates between 28 mBar and 37 mBar, which are the UK legal limits, and the two most mainstream and widely used gasses.

For all-in-one portable cooking while camping, Campingaz has a variety of grills and stoves. These include: The Cadac Carri Chef 2 stands on long legs for cooking without bending (much). It has piezo ignition and adjustable temperature. This is the sort of gas bottle you need for the Cadacand the Campingaz Party stove. It’s butane,so see the note earlier about cold temperatures. The BBQ uses a ridged griddle pan which is specially angled to allow juice and fat to flow off into a trap. The griddle is removeable for easy cleaning. The Trangia takes about 7-8 minutes to boil 1 litre of water which is more than double the time of the gas burners. You literally just top it up with the alcohol of your choice and seal it shut – these things don’t leak which is great.

Pan support issue or not, Jim is sceptical of the construction – “a thin-walled gas canister, lying on its side, a couple of inches from the burner – and with no real leakproof method of connection other than the can being pushed against a seal by a piece of bent tin”.
