However, in the case of Blur, gameplay variation is rife - varying amounts of cars are on screen and different effects are in play at any given point, so we can only really gauge general conclusions about each platform as opposed to a more direct head-to-head. The results are quite enlightening though. Digital Foundry hearts Blur. Eurogamer has already gone into depth about why the game is so good to play in its review, but this appreciation is only strengthened when you experience the scale of the technical achievement on offer: full 720p resolution, high levels of anti-aliasing, up to 20 cars on-screen at any point, a large, highly detailed rear-view mirror, masses of post-processing effects, no LOD popping. The list goes on. At its very core it is Project Gotham Racing: take to the circuit with semi-sim, semi-arcade car handling and earn "fans" (as opposed to kudos) by racing creatively. But there's much more to Blur than its PGR inspired core. The power-up racing concept is very much a Mario Kart staple, though here it feels more in-tune with Wipeout here. The aesthetic is very neon-lit futuristic like Wipeout, with some of the power-ups even sharing a resemblance with the futuristic racer. It's also a bit Twisted Metal mind, with big multiplayer arenas set aside for huge demolition battles which feel as close to Twisted Metal PS3 as you're going to get until David Jaffe jumps out of the woodwork.

The game’s story unfolds through Bizarre Creations’ unique and innovative community-based interface, enabling players to build a network of allies, rivals, fans and personalized racing experiences with friends both inside and outside the game. Blur delivers a new style of powered-up racing experience for all gamers. Mahood, Andy (August 2010). "Blur review". PC Gamer UK. Future plc. p.94. Archived from the original on January 7, 2015 . Retrieved April 7, 2023. In the final analysis of the full retail game, performance remains absolutely astonishing bearing in mind how rich the action can be; Blur maintains 30FPS even with masses of cars and effects on-screen. Bizarre's achievement here really has to be seen to be believed: there's no lag in the controls, no slowdown on-screen.

Social Network Interface – Blur’s new, innovative social network user interface is designed to evolve dynamically as players compete in different races, make new friends, rivals and fans, and connect with other racers both in game and in real life. Gamers interact with one another through messaging, trading opinions, challenges and images, and learn what’s going on in the Blur world, including locating where and when the next big races are happening, rallying their fans for support, and taking up challenges designed to suit their favorite racing style. In the US, Blur sold 31,000 units in its first five days of release according to the NPD. [28] The game ultimately sold 500,000 units. [29] Blur is a remarkable and singular technical achievement, especially in relation to what Bizarre Creations achieved with Project Gotham Racing 4 (still a great-looking game itself). The number of cars on-screen at any given point has increased, the amount of effects in play can be quite overwhelming, and overall image quality has been boosted too. Rigney, Ryan (May 25, 2010). Despite the time that has passed, I have yet to see any racing game that comes close to the feeling I get from Blur, and I doubt I ever will. a b c Kato, Matthew (July 2010). "Blur Review".
