The Northman finds its biggest success in its depiction of Viking rituals, their spiritual beliefs, and how closely knit the people were to nature.It's also unmistakably the work of Eggers, a very precise and idiosyncratic indie director whose prior movies felt like stylistic dares. The height speakers bring down rain, thunder, and other supernatural elements, along with spears flying through the air and other guttural screams from above. But it’s the brutally honest depiction, without judgment, of the Vikings that further sets Eggers’ film apart from others in the genre.At a lugubrious 140 minutes, there's enough sticky carnage to satiate fans of brutish medieval action movies, but I appreciated how Eggers keeps his story purposely streamlined and simplistic until a few keen reveals force the audience and protagonist to re-examine the assumptions and fleeting honor of vengeance in this harsh, unfair environment of men out-killing one another. Pretty much every living thing that appears on the screen will be slaughtered at one time or another – humans and animals alike.

Not so here: every scene, thanks to its Dolby Vision mastering, shows every last bit of detail on your screen. But if you’re looking for an involving story with three-dimensional characters, you should pass on this bloated, overwrought, wannabe epic and look elsewhere – like “Hagar the Horrible. The Northman comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray courtesy of Universal, marrying up to its stellar US release from a month back which is almost certainly an identical disc.
