Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. Tyvek is sometimes called fabric, sometimes called paper, and like both it’s available in rolls and sheets. Part of its strength is that it combines the properties of both of those, it can be printed or written upon like a paper but it will also drape like a fabric. Over and above that however, is that it’s much stronger than paper, and far more versatile than fabric (not to mention a fraction of the price). A: The traditional dyeing process for cloth is not applicable for Tyvek®. But the surface of Tyvek® can be colored by printing.

DuPont™ Tyvek® is part of a family of tough, durable sheet products used in a variety of applications. Material Concepts is a leading authorized supplier of many Tyvek® styles. Tyvek® 1073D can be also sewn, welded or stapled: it features a hard structure style that combines the performances of paper, fabric, film and it capable to keep a shape even when it is folded. A: Tyvek® is equally strong wet or dry under ordinary conditions and ambient temperature (73.4°F [23°C]). Upon initial exposure, water will not penetrate Tyvek®. With time, or increased water pressure, drops of water will go through Tyvek®. It is suggested that customers should test the performance of Tyvek® for their specific application. It’s breathable, waterproof and dustproof - Any items wrapped will be protected from water and dust, but will also be able to breath, preventing condensation which could encourage mould growth and pests. It will filter out 99.9% of particles from the air down to 0.5-0.7 micron in size reducing risks from many airborne pollutants. Both the rough and the smooth side of the Tyvek® sheets are coated with an antistatic agent for outstanding adhesion of inks and glues: although the two sides are printable, full-coverage printing is recommended on the smooth area only. You may like to read our blog on textile and costume storage which talks about prefabricated Tyvek garment covers. A: Tyvek® should not be considered as flame retardant and its flammability is like most synthetic fibers. Tyvek® type 10 has been tested according to ASTM E84-89a with a class A rating. Type 14 Tyvek® has been tested according to 16 CFR 1610 with a class 1 rating. The melting point of Tyvek® is 135°C and the ignition point of high density polyethylene is approximately 400°C. Specific flame-retardant requirements can be met by applying a special coating to Tyvek®.

Because of its suitability for conservation and flexibility in application, Tyvek can be used in hundreds of different ways – most of which we will leave you to discover (we haven’t thought of!). A: DuPont™ Tyvek® is made from 100% high-density polyethylene (HDPE). For this reason, pure Tyvek® can be recycled as HDPE. A: The antimicrobial requirements of a material depend on the specific industry and application in which it is used. Q31: Can Tyvek® be sewn? How can a sewn seam be strengthened and water resistant performance improved in the sewn area of Tyvek®?A: Tyvek® is a non-woven material, and its abrasion performance cannot be compared with woven fabric. Increased abrasion performance can be achieved by lamination with another material. It is suggested that Customers should always evaluate the performance of Tyvek® for their specific application. Soft structure Type 14 is soft, fabric-like and drapeable. Sewing, gluing and, to a limited extent, ultrasonic seaming and heat sealing, may be used in fabricating these styles. Type 14 styles are used where barrier, durability and breathability are required. They offer excellent barrier against particulate matter and can provide an excellent bacterial barrier. The unique low-linting properties, combined with the barrier properties, make Type 14 an excellent material for cleanroom garments and pharmaceutical manufacturing garments.
