My heart broke for Alys, the way she would remember Darro’s words, repeating them like a mantra, her fond memories of when he’d look after her when the world abandoned her in the cold, and the way she takes on his mannerisms and begins to live by “what would Darro do? By the time I made it to the end of the book, I’d finally realized a couple things, and was able to understand just why I didn’t find this story particularly compelling. I am going to add a bit under my review in case anyone who was an Expanse fan wants to know if this is for them. In short, the two main characters of this story are secondary and tertiary characters with respect to the important events occurring within the city.

She never expresses her feelings to anyone, nor do we never see any other characters with same-sex attraction to compare it to or know how she would be received in the world at large. Age of Ash is the first volume of a new trilogy set in Kithamar, a massive walled city divided by a deep river, and ruled by the Hansch, a race of people who live mostly in the wealthy districts on the river’s west side. Having said that I will say I'm not disappointed at all bu there were a couple that things that weren't exactly my cup of tea. This time around however, the read left me wondering for the first time, what his motivation might have been when sitting down to pen this new novel of fantasy. What is worse, after reading the book, one still doesn’t know what would happen had a party other than the one won won. During this year, there will be intrigue and conflict and the lives of thousands will be impacted in obvious and not-so-obvious ways.

If we continue to spend most of our time in this city in the future or if we venture out and learn more about the world beyond the walls. Originally a part of the same pick pocket crew as Alys, Sammish’s unrequited love for the main character is what draws her in to the conspiracies surrounding Darro’s death. Each of the books in this series, we’ve been told, will cover essentially the same period of time, and only be told from the perspective of different sets of characters. The central conflict of the book lacks the moral complexity more common in recent fantasy works, but makes up for it with Abraham's trademark excellent prose and thoughtful descriptions. I believe her pay off is worth the journey this book takes, but I actually think it could have used an extra 100-150 pages to really soak in the journey she experiences. We see Alys through Sammish’s eyes, we learn about Sammish’s life in the city, and how Alys’s interactions with the “friends” of her brother are part of something larger indeed. Little by little we learn quite a few things about Alys, however, it is a while before we spend a full chapter on what life was like when it was just her and her mom.
