The five string banjo standard C tuned (aka Drop C) is (g4 C3 G3 B3 D4) just the same as the open G tuning (gDGBD), except that the fourth string is a step lower. That makes the lowest note you can play on the 5-string is a C instead of a D. Effect of Being Logged In

As late as 1967, when you heard banjo on mainstream radio, it was nearly always in C tuning – even if the song was in the key of G!
