Description

The pentagonal nut on the top of the original Mini was susceptible to wear and tear, eventually rendering it useless as the handle would no longer attach. This has been replaced with a flat-wing nut, which also suffers from wear and tear but not in a way that affects the use of the grinder. I wasn’t a big fan of the old version of the Skerton. The new version, which was released in 2017, however, has upped its game significantly. Did you know that if you remove the rubber sleeve this grinder fits perfectly into the bottom of an AeroPress? For those of you who like to have your coffee cupboards/corners super neat (like me) this is a real storage dream. It’s not the lightest weight hand grinder. It is too big to fit inside an Aeropress plunger (the Porlex famously can do that); it isn’t ideal for espresso (though a burr upgrade will fix that). But it’s a pleasure to use, fast to grind, and produces a fantastic grind for drip, pour over, siphon, cloth brewing, Chemex, Aeropress, and press pot.

It features 18 different settings to give you precise control over your grind and clean stainless steel design that will complement the décor scheme of most modern kitchens. Despite the many settings, the product is also easy to use, with a simple interface that includes an adjustment knob, a pulse button, and a straightforward on/off switch. The quality construction ties it all together. Baratza is known for its high-end parts, which are imported from Europe to top industry standards. However, if you want something suitable for espresso or you’re the kind of person who only wants the best of the best, there are still a few other grinders out there that are better.

Simple and functional designs are what Porlex specializes in. All of their hand grinders are built to last, made in their factory in Kagoshima, Japan. The low manufacturing tolerances for the original Porlex meant that the pentagonal nut had suffered from wear issues that rendered it useless. The wing nut does, in theory, solve this, but I did find the material a tad bit soft, wearing a slight but detectable notch after my second 12g grind. If you’re considering getting a Hario or Porlex grinder, you seriously need to upgrade your budget a tiny bit and get this one instead.
