OH wow. . . .just WOW. Jennifer Nielson has done it again. I fell in love with Meg and Jakob, and was captured in my own world by the beautiful writing. I will definitely read this again, and mayhap out loud to my brother who loves adventure. Who knows what the future has in store. The next day, I strapped him in and worked with him for another six hours. That night, I called my wife in Hawaii and apologized again. I put my older son on the phone and he talked to his mom, then I got on the phone again. “Oh, by the way,” I said, “Ryan has something to say to you.” Very shortly after publication in 1920, a book review came out in "The Sewanee Review" in which G.H.C. said that The Rescue is "deeply and sincerely imaginative", and "is Conrad at his best" [1] However, I didn't feel like the other characters were quite as developed as they could've been. Jakob seemed very similar to other male friend characters in Nielsen's historical works. And Alfred seemed a bit flat. I wasn't sure of his motivations. I think Liesel was the most developed out of the three.

Rainbow Fish has a ‘sparkling silver scale’. Can you think of any more alliterative phrases that can be used to describe a fish (or another creature)? I wish that not all of the chapters ended on a cliffhanger. Its a good writing tactic, but made it difficult to find a stopping spot as a reader. 😜 Bookworm Glass Ornament - Book Rescue Librarian Reading Bookworm Literature Book Nerd Ornament - BOOK027RESCUE is a tale of dauntless courage, family bonds, and spy codes, told in Nielsen's easy and nostalgic writing style. First: A big thank you to Goodreads Giveaways for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. Heliena Krenn says “It was the Malay Archipelago with its truths about human life dimmed by the mists of its jungles and waterways that started Conrad on his career as a novelist”. She is arguing that without the Lingard Trilogy, Conrad's other works on colonialism and imperialism would not have been as powerful. She also argues that to completely understand other works such as Heart of Darkness or Lord Jim, readers must look closely at the Lingard Trilogy. Krenn also points out that the three books must be read as one unit, that actions portrayed in one affect the other two. [3] Looking specifically at The Rescue, Krenn points out that the novel had many omissions in its final publication. According to Krenn, those omissions show Lingard's adventure as an "intended subversion of the interests of European colonial authorities and his motivation as rooted in ambitions for power, the emphasis and attention of the narrative shift to Lingard's conflict of divided loyalties". Another fabulous piece of historical fiction by Jennifer Nielson! This one is the story of 12-year-old Meg, who has been working for the Resistance in her small village in occupied France. After discovering an injured British spy, she sets off across France and through the French Alps to help smuggle three Germans to safety. She relies on the code games she had played with her father before he went undercover as well. An exciting adventure full of twists and turns. Who can Meg really trust on this perilous journey? Her father's fate lies in her hands. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.

If you enjoyed any of Nielsen's other historical fiction books, you'll see lots of running threads in this one. A young female protagonist, usually set in World War II, with lots of action and gripping moments. Look at the different colours used in the illustrations. Can you use paint to try and mix some of these colours? Someone Named Eva -- this one just hasn't gotten enough reads, but you'll probably want to read at the same time bc of its subject matter. Mrs Travers is fascinated by Immada's attractiveness, but the girl and her brother reproach Lingard for recently neglecting them, and leave with him when the interview comes to a fruitless conclusion.Story starts with Joe a drug-sniffing dog, his master Dan and a team of drug hunters are in Tijuana Mexico. There is a bloody shootout and six team members are shot including Joe. I'm entertained by books with amusing animal characters, especially pets that 'talk.' One of the main protagonists in this story is a mongrel pooch named Joe, a 55-pound Labrador-Terrier mix with gull wing ears and an exceptional sense of smell. I was not prepared for this book. I thought it was going to be a fun thriller that included a dog. I was mistaken. Find out about environmental issues that are affecting coral reefs. How can people help to protect them?
