I was a huge fan of Thirteen but for me this book just wasn’t as good in my opinion; the characters weren’t as well developed and I have to say the plot didn’t have the same impact. Built on an interesting premise, the story takes the reader through a number of exciting twists, while watching the characters piece together what has been revealed through a tantalising narrative. The way Eddie was born happened while Steve was doing a trial cross-examination and made the witness tell the truth through an old courtroom trick he used on the poor witness. The only negative I can say is that when you tell everyone to expect twists, they are reading looking for twists. This is when I came across the Eddie Flynn series, a legal thriller series that is equally well-written.

Twisted by Steve Cavanagh | Waterstones

Maria has assuaged her inner need for human connection by taking a lover, Daryl, an impoverished country club instructor and waiter. After a hiatus of more than 15 years he got back to writing determined to become a published author.Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn is something of a cross between John Grisham’s Mitch McDeere of The Firm and Frank Galvin of The Verdict. As a result of this and the amazing Thirteen, Steve Cavanagh is definitely on my list of authors to read and recommend.

Twisted By Steve Cavanagh |The Works

While he was born as Steven Mearns, he took his mother’s maiden name, Cavanagh, as a tribute to her, as well as to separate his two identities: that of a legal thriller author and that of a lawyer. Despite Maria and her lover being extremely self-centred unlikable characters, they are so well written that they do not come off as stereotypes. The main enemy in the book is Joshua Kane who is much more evil and ruthless than even Hannibal Lector, the character of the author’s first read as a teen. p>

About reading his first thriller book, he says, “That changed everything and I read Red Dragon straight after and fell in love with crime and thriller novels.Under the watch of the FBI and the media, Eddie needs to put every con artist trick and razor sharp wit to use to get the Russian mobster off the hook and save his daughter. His cases ranged from traffic accidents, work-related accidents, to severe incidents involving injuries. We learn that she was a cop in New York but for reasons explained in the book she ended up at Lonely Point where the majority of the story is set. Maria cannot believe that her husband, who keeps her on an allowance, has been writing some of the most talked about books and no one has yet identified him.

At the same time, Maria and Daryl devise a plan to ensure that the end of the Cooper marriage does not leave them without a nest egg. Similar to the likes of Lee Child who is British yet sets his Reacher novels in the US or John Connolly who lives in Belfast yet sets his Charlie Parker novels in Maine, he set out to do the same. Nonetheless, he still went on to practice civil rights law and even became part of a number of high profile cases. To talk too much more about the plot would be to give away some of the obvious and less obvious twists. With The Defense, the first book by the author, Steve Cavanagh showed the world that to win a case, the truth is not always necessary. This one will probably be one of my most evasive reviews so far and for that I won’t actually apologise, as believe me when you read this book for yourself you will be glad I didn’t really tell you anything.
