The "Mad Men" era of the 50's and 60's was probably the golden age of this stuff, more likely being splashed on the necks of mafioso than marketing agents, but the sharp bracing aroma still has some use in the 21st century.

Acqua di Selvi builds up from the previous Victor fragrance Silvestri (1948), adding healthy doses of pine to the kitchen herb mix that seems to be a staple among Mediterranean eau de colognes patterned after and expanded from Acqua di Parma Colonia (1916). This scent encapsulates a stroll on the beach beautifully, and puts you right at ease with a few sprays in the morning.Give this scent a few sprays before a late morning brunch with friends on a terrace when the sun shines as much as the smiles on your friends faces. It is not a distasteful cologne in any way, but in my humble opinion they just don't make it like they used to. Have added several aftershaves and colognes to my collection - especially those of timeless appeal like Acqua di Selva. Eau de cologne concentration means you might need re-apply this a bit to last a work day, but Acqua di Selva was made in an age where a man used scent as part of good grooming and not to act as an olfactive entourage to announce his eminence throughout a day, so perhaps layer it if you're looking for something "more". Over time, it grows spicier and damp-grassy-woody, and it just feels like the paragon of old world masculinity.

I always look at those "it ain't made like the old stuff" style reviews with a degree of skepticism. This was my father's fragrance of choice, and it was added to my arsenal in high school in the early 90's. But the middle notes are, overall, similar to the rest of the fragrance itself: dry, herbaceous, slightly green. My logic was that going back to this old favorite would be that special "icing on the cake" to my morning shave and grooming regimen.

All this is accompanied by a very successful lavender-tonka bean-oak moss Accord, which gives me the feeling of walking through a green summer forest. In addition, as we give you the option to choose what best suits your needs from several sellers, you have the power to decide so you can make your purchase as you wish. Acqua di Selva is much more balanced and less cold medicinal camphor than the Avon, but I can see the inspiration. There is a very strictly clean helping of lemon oil, camphor, and some taut English lavender, reminding me much of a component in Avon's Structured for Man (1969) vanity set (see the Steel component).
