Description

It was a totally different experience for me,” Wright says, “but I thought it was really cool. The others kept looking at me with curiosity: ‘Who is this guy?’ I think they quite liked the fact that I was the only American in a group of Englishmen. Spooky Tooth was pretty unique in that way. But I was the one who wrote most of the music. We rehearsed every day and got our live act together really well.” Filename C:\Users\Meijin\Desktop\ALLexxess\Spooky Tooth\2015 Island Years 1967-1974 (9CD Box Set Universal Island)\1968 It's All About\Spooky Tooth - It's All About.wav

There was no upturn in the band’s fortunes, though, at least not in Britain. Spooky Two crept into the Top 50 in the US (where it was issued on the A&M label) and did decent, if unspectacular, business in Europe. That summer, it also brought a substantial hit single, as Marriott’s “Natural Born Bugie” climbed to No.4 on the UK charts. The Island Years is available as a nine-CD box set or an eight-LP collection. All of the albums feature rare bonus material and the anthology ends with a full concert from April 1972, recorded in Germany. In total, there is over 30 previously unreleased recordings. Harrison wound up a fitful solo career and quit the business for what would be more than 20 years. Wright, meanwhile, became a major solo star in the US with the release of the hit singles Dream Weaver and Love Is Alive.

Balance is finally restored with the return of Mike Harrison on the German live album which finds him in good voice. All previously unreleased Recorded at the Wesser-Ems Halle, Oldenburg, Germany on 7th April 1973 on the Island Mobile studio Then in 1969 came the invitation from Steve Marriott to be part of his new adventure in Humble Pie. One of the early supergroups, their line-up also included drummer Jerry Shirley and, of course, former “Face Of ‘68” Peter Frampton from The Herd. An Immediate success

There was a messy attempt at a reunion when the original line-up (minus Wright) regrouped to make the album Cross Purpose, released in 1999. A year after Ridley passed away in 2003, Wright, Harrison and Kellie played a series of successful shows in Germany as Spooky Tooth. And although the name was resurrected for a brief tour in 2009, after coming together for Island’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, it’s unlikely that Spooky Tooth will ever happen again. There’s a redolent funky feel, a trademark classic organ sound and even a syrupy Garry Wright power-ballad ‘Kyle’, but by the time of its release the band had split up. It’s OK but it ain’t really the Tooth!MONO – Recorded 1st July 1969 at Island Studios, Basing Street, London. B-side of European single – Released as Island WIP 6058 in 1969 Ridley made an album with Marriott that wasn’t released, and apart from some attempts at collaboration with Boxer and Mike Patto, left the industry. He resurfaced to be part of the moving tribute concert to Marriott in London in 2001, along with Shirley, Frampton and his replacement in the band, “Clem” Clempson, and toured and recorded for a while with a latter-day Humble Pie approximation before becoming ill. He died in Alicante in 2003 of pneumonia and complications from it, but his key role in two significant British bands is fondly remembered.

The sonic quality is excellent throughout the studio albums and highlights the intricacy of their music. The box set also includes a great booklet and a poster from Art. The booklet is filled with tons of information, press cuttings, and fantastic photographs, helping you to almost close your eyes and imagine that you’re there, witnessing this band unfold in front of you.

From 2 January we’ll be featuring significant albums reviewed 2003-2023 in our featured album sequences as part of GRTR!@20 Gathering together eight studio albums plus a live set from ’73, various B-sides and radio sessions, this lavish box set argues that, far from being also-rans, Spooky Tooth were serious contenders who missed out on the breaks and thus the big time. Starting life as Art, their 1967 one-off release, Supernatural Fairy Tales is beat-combo infused psychedelia at which producer Guy Stevens throws everything but the multi-coloured kitchen sink, transforming heavyish pop songs into something more in keeping with the acid-saturated times, creating a truly glorious period piece.
