Description

It is, at its core, a novel about breaking down the walls that the sexes tend to put up to keep the other side out. Fikrine çok güvendiğim dostlarım (Özellikle Ozancan Demirışık ve Hazal Çamur) bazı kitapların bağımsız olduğunu, istediğimden başlayabileceğimi, muhakkak okumam gerektiğini söylediğinde Terry Pratchett ile tanışmak istedim. In later books she loses most of that (which is for the best) and while she may not be worldly, she is still self-posessed and wise. Indira Varma does not, in any way, differentiate between the voices of all the different characters, or even the voices of the characters and the voice of the narrator.

With the help of Granny Weatherwax and Archchancellor Cutangle, who have retrieved the staff, they both manage to transport themselves back into the Discworld. The plot structure of Equal Rites is definitely not what I was expecting, and if I had one major criticism of this book, it's that the plot only really picks up speed when we're almost at the end. Drum Billet is a wizard and about to die and needs to pass on his wizarding staff to a suitable successor: the eighth son of an eighth son. Having read through the entire Discworld series, we are now going back and re-reading by the sub-series that make up the whole set.

Unfortunately the faculty’s ideas on equal rights are pretty ancient too, so Esk must prove her magical mettle in Terry Pratchett’s third Discworld Book, Equal Rites.

Pratchett was a feminist and there is no better way than the contrast between the first novels around the incompetent, and to a certain extent evil, Rincewind, and the selfless and clever witches to show and demonstrate mens´ hairy deficits and how he is rolling. Pratchett was very familiar with these novels and referenced them in several novels as well as creating many similarities between Gormenghast and Lancre Castle as well as with .I may be overthinking here and this may not be what the author meant at all, but you can replace the word magic in this quote with money. A central theme of this book (also found in many of the other Discworld witch novels) is the contrast between, on one side the (female) witches or wiccans, who are in touch with nature, herbs and headology, and on the other side the (male) wizards who are very ceremonial and use elaborate, mathematics-like tools and rituals. Pratchett introduces her very well and keeps her grounded with her stubborn nature and inability to accept she doesn't know things.

She soon discovers however that it isn't enough - Esk's magic continues to burst forth and since Esk's staff is quite cheeky too, all Granny can do is get Esk to the Unseen University. Esk is unsuccessful in her first, direct, attempt to gain entry to the University, but Granny Weatherwax finds another way in; as a servant. When these appear, Granny starts to train her in witchcraft and later they travel to the city of Ankh Morpork to seek entrance for Eskarina into the Unseen University, despite the fact that the wizards are adamant that only men can be wizards. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy ( Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz ( Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. There's nothing wrong with it, mind you, but it was still very early on in Pratchett's career, and it doesn't have the smoothness of his later work.
