The brightest parts of the highlights were so light that I wanted to avoid painting them at all, but this colour was the next lightest I could see. I applied it with a size 1 brush and stippled the paint a little to recreate the rough texture of the frog’s skin. I applied this new mix to all areas that were this colour or darker, while holding off from applying it to any areas that were lighter in tone. I then mixed Payne’s Gray with Quinacridone Purple to create an inky blue that I applied to the darker blue areas on the legs, painting around the little dots of paler colours. I kept my mix really pale and used a combination of Permanent Sap Green and a touch of Payne’s Gray with lots of water. Created and curated to provide the perfect focal point or unifying feature to bring to life any room with style. Doing so is important because capturing the full tonal range within each area of colour is crucial to the 3D realism of the subject as a whole.

To finish mapping out where all the different colours go, I mixed Payne’s Gray and Burnt Sienna to create a black colour and watered it right down to apply it to the black parts of the frog with my 000 brush.
