In the "Tremolo" position, this is either a stereo pan effect or tremolo depending on the selected Voice. That’s not to say that it’s incapable of sonic complexity, but the way it’s all implemented makes experimentation fun regardless of your synthesis skill level. It results in a rounded and comprehensive collection with perhaps the only omission being some kind of ‘SK’ string machine.

The Rhodes Mk1 is warm, the MK2 is brighter with more attack when you dig in (though the sample's velocity- switching is more noticeable between layers via the onboard keyboard), the Wurli sounds great, and the Clavinet is one of the more authentic clav samples around, with some nice sympathetic- resonance and vibe for days! The same philosophy extends to the YC organ: only one of its inspirations comes from Yamaha’s own stable. The biggest downside is the mini keyboard – we frequently found ourselves wanting another octave or two of keys. The editing should be sufficient to satisfy most programming needs and is even suitable for tweaking on the fly, not something that is usually the case with FM. For example, the oscillator section is actually a five-mode tone generator that’s capable of an impressive array of sounds, thanks to a pair of “macro” sliders—Texture and Mod—that shape each mode’s character in useful ways.

MOBILE MINI KEYBOARD Owner’s Manual EN - Yamaha

To sum up - an impressive little keyboard that contains sounds that can compete with more expensive, full-size EPs. The dedicated pitch envelope also follows this model, allowing for wild digital swoops when applied to just one or two of the operators (instead of all four). Inspired by the iconic keyboards of yesteryear, the Reface CP puts a contemporary reimagining of the legendary Yamaha CP80 electric grand piano right at your fingertips. In the Reface DX, each operator includes its own discrete feedback loop, which can skew the sine wave incrementally toward either a sawtooth or square.

The Farfisa sound can be found in pop tracks like “When A Man Loves A Woman” and “Crocodile Rock”, later being co-opted by late-’70s new wave bands like Blondie, the B-52s, and early Talking Heads. Being a newbie to the piano, I don't have much that I can compare it to, but to me, the keys feel great.

It’s the only one to have a display and patch memories — evidence that Yamaha haven’t yet found a way to make FM fast enough or accessible enough to manage without.

The speed can be flipped from fast to slow, with realistic transitions built in and even a ‘stopped’ mode, where the movement is temporarily paused. Both classic and modern sounds are available, making the reface CP a truly versatile and powerful little beast. I've been playing the Reface CP for a little over 3 weeks now, and I've really fallen in love with it. After their announcement, the Refaces drew comparisons to both the Roland Aria series and Korg's Volcas due to their affordability and inspiration taken from their respective companies' previously released synthesisers.

reface - reface CP - Yamaha - UK and Ireland

When it comes to the CP model, it isn’t just Yamaha’s history that’s been re-imagined but that of several other electric piano makers too. That’s not to say it’s a dirty “acid” filter, though the resonance’s squeaky self-oscillation can emulate that sound in a pinch.Being irredeemably shallow, I opted to start with the prettiest, which in my opinion is the red YC model. The concept also integrates a web-based sound exchange between musicians and allows a cooperative sound design. The Cutoff slider adjusts the Filter from follow closed (0) to wide open (127) while the Resonance slider adds harmonics at the Cutoff point. Audio input– this lets you route the output of mobile devices and other keyboards through the Reface CP.
