The book is beautiful with pictures from the show and many of the dishes that it includes recipes for. As with the other books in the series, this one provides a brief history of the tea treat and explains how it would have been made and when and why.

Others were cookbooks written by aristocratic ladies like Lady Cora Crawley with recipes gifted to them by other ladies of her circle. Other classical French dishes featured include Pork Chops with Sauce Robert, for which it is helpful to have Sauce Espagnole on hand because Sauce Robert is a composite sauce built from other sauces. The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook (2019) is a gorgeous publication that is just lush in it's food photography and production but is also full of insights into British Food. With these and more historic recipes, savour the rich traditions and flavours of Downton Abbey without end. With a foreword by Gareth Neame, executive producer and co-creator of Downton Abbey, and featuring over 100 stunning colour photographs, many taken on the set of Downton Abbey and using the original glassware and china, The Downton Abbey Cookbook also includes a special section on hosting Downton-themed dinner parties, and includes stills from across the TV series as well as the latest film.

This book is being re-released in a gift set with a matching apron this year in 2022 for seasonal gift giving. It's a really fun mix of food/cookery info from Edwardian England, a little trivia from the show, and very interesting and achievable recipes. Banana Cream Ice, meanwhile, is adapted from an original recipe in Agnes Marshall’s The Book of Ices. Many of the recipes I chose came from cookbooks written by women, and some women, like England’s first freelance food journalist; Florence White, and Lady Agnes Jekyll were very much like Lady Edith. Those who have brushed up on their Escoffier will know that Maître d’Hôtel refers to a simple and tasty combination of butter, cayenne, parsley, salt, and pepper (a combination that goes well with just about anything! This is a lovely book with interesting and informative text, plus wonderful photographs and recipes that demonstrate the “Downton” era both upstairs and downstairs.

The book intermingles quotes about tea from the Downton Abbey series and photographs from the show that depicts tea in some manner. This time last year, Frank and I were putting the finishing touches on a month long trip to Austria and Greece. This book also explains how to make a proper cup of tea and how to hold your cup (pinkies out is bad manners). The introduction gives an excellent overview of the way food was important in British society and also how the dishes served were different for the various classes. Lots of the recipes are for traditional English cakes, such as Battenberg, Crumpets or Chelsea Buns that you would find in many another book, but it's good to have it all together in one for those who wish to serve a traditional English Afternoon tea to their friends and family. As well as the recipes there are some lovely photos of the period setting of the programme and stories of Downton included. Like the Kedgeree above, this Prawn Curry recipe is easy to prepare and it makes use of ingredients that could be found in my cupboard or easy to obtain from the local supermarket – curry powder, coconut milk, spinach, onion, prawns, etc.

I found the short history of tea, tea making and everything that developed around it, very interesting. Embrace Highclere glamor and the cuisine and customs of the Crawley household with The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook ! When it comes to desserts, The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook includes recipes for Spotted Dick and Trifle, dishes that are associated with the British aristocracy (though Annie herself is known to be something of a trifle sceptic).

Annie Gray includes more than 100 authentic and delicious period recipes, accompanied by spectacular images of the Downton Abbey cast, food photography, quotes and historical information to vividly bring the dishes and customs of the Crawley’s English country home to life. She thinks Victorian food is vastly underrated, though can also see why they needed decent corsetry, but has to admit that the Georgians did it better, if only because of the parmesan ice cream and all that brandy. There was a Downton Abbey film and spin-off television series "The Golden Age" currently airing on television. We learn that macaroni cheese was popular in England as far back as the 18th century, before it became an all-American classic.
