So all in all we get tears when the stars align and they are more likely to alight when it is relatively mild, fairly long in duration, incurs some embarrassment and triggers the right mood. My wife’s attitude toward tears was originally hugely important I don’t think spanking would have produced crying without that positive reinforcement. But failing to correct a child effectively inevitably leads to a further, avoidable punishment. The threat of sister on sister violence. The older one’s voice is harsh, angry. The room is tense. The younger one protests, and the older one’s face hardens. Does the age difference even matter? It’s not much. Again, only an ogre would want to beat a child until (to invoke an old cliché) they can’t sit down for a month of Sundays. But a spanking should hurt. And at the same time I recognize the truth of what everyone else is saying that it really can't be the goal of a spanking for it to end in tears. It's a spontaneous occurrence so it will naturally resist an agenda. It seems to be a general rule that the mind will tend to resist an idea that it perceives as coming from outside of itself and accept one that it identifies as being its own. Maybe this is not only true between people but even within one's own self, i.e. the desire for me to cry this particular time being resisted by the 'unconscious' emotional part of myself from where deep cathartic crying actually emerge.
