Setting the ZonePlayer S5 up is simplicity itself, whether you’re already a Sonos user or not. If you already have a Sonos install you just put the ZP-S5 into discoverable mode, and then search for a new zone using your Sonos controller, or PC client. A few seconds later the ZP-S5 will be added to your list of Zones and you’re ready to go. The Sonos system only has four components, but with them you can set up a wireless music system that will accommodate anything from a one-bedroom condominium to a 60,000 square-foot trophy house. The first component is the BR100, which serves as the Internet link and wireless broadcast hub. Don't want to dig through menus? Not a problem. That's why search was invented, and why the iPhone app supports it. Just type in the title or some keywords and, if it's available, it will pop right up.

The outgoing Sonos One and Sonos One SL wireless speakers (both will be phased out eventually as Era 100 comes to market), in turn had replaced the now-discontinued Play:1. The only difference between the latter two is that the One SL doesn't have voice control, so is slightly cheaper. There's also the premium Sonos Five smart speaker, which replaces the Play:5, and the company's first fully portable wireless speaker with Bluetooth, the 2019 Sonos Move. This was recently succeeded by the new Sonos Move 2.

Sonos, Inc., introduced two new ZonePlayers to deliver a state-of-the-art multi-room music experience. With innovations in both wireless technology and amplifier design, the Sonos ZonePlayer 120 (ZP120) and the Sonos ZonePlayer 90 (ZP90) make Sonos the ideal system for music lovers who want to enjoy all the music they love, all over the house. The new ZonePlayers are available starting today at all Sonos authorized retailers and at http://www.sonos.com.

For the portable speakers, Sonos has an 'automatic' version that uses the mics inside the Move 2, Move and Roam speakers to complete the tuning. If you keep this option (and the speaker's internal mic) on at all times, the auto tuning will happen every time you move the portable speaker. Again, as Chad said, it would be nice if the iPhone itself could also be set up as a portable "zone", carrying the same synched content with you around the house, and playing along with the same queue, but if that was an option, we couldn't find it. Maybe version 2.0? Conclusion Note: Sonos has an installation CD that you can load up on your desktop or laptop to setup the system, but since this is an iPhone blog, I skipped this step and decided to with a full on iPhone-only setup. Of course, this may well change when the somewhat controversial Sonos S2 platform launches in May 2020. Sonos has heavily hinted at hi-res being part of that update, which the Amp will get but the ZonePlayer 100 and most Connect:Amps will not.Once you’ve connected your chosen speakers to the Amp, it’s worth delving into the EQ menu in the settings and experimenting with the Loudness feature, which is switched on by default. The speaker is able to use Wi-Fi independently or itself or a Boost via Ethernet to run SonosNet, a peer-to-peer mesh network which allows the user to play media on some, one or all speakers connected to the network. [8] It also can establish a stereo pair with another Play:5 to create a separate left and right audio channel [11] and can pair additionally with a Playbar or SUB to create a home theater system. a b Gideon, Tim (10 November 2009). "Sonos ZonePlayer S5". PC Magazine . Retrieved 4 November 2016– via Ziff Davis. Sonos's mission statement is to offer 'all the music on Earth', so as well as allowing you to play music from digital libraries (such as from a NAS device or a laptop), the app also offers the widest choice of streaming service compatibility. Sonos's aim is to be platform agnostic, and it's the most comprehensive list we've seen in any multi-room product. LC3 can also send out multiple audio streams simultaneously for better stereo pairing and more seamless voice assistant integration. And it can stream to multiple devices at once – so more than one pair of headphones could listen to the same audio simultaneously – much like a multi-room system working over wi-fi.

The bigs news is that Sonos is making its first ever pair of wireless headphones. Probably. Because while the firm hasn't actually confirmed it, it's been rumoured for years that Sonos has a pair of wireless headphones in the pipeline. Network bridging: The 2-port switch (10/100Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX) allows Ethernet devices to connect through SonosNet™ Initially I attached the ZP90 ZonePlayer to my downstairs home theater and hooked up the ZP120 to a pair of Axiom 4B speakers in my workroom. After several weeks I relocated the ZP90 to my upstairs home theater and moved the ZP120 into my master bedroom/bathroom. Unlike some wireless systems, where changing the physical location of the components requires a complete re-setup, the Sonos system was up and running 30 seconds after re-installation. A major part of Sonos's appeal and meteoric rise in popularity lies in its hugely simple set-up process.

Comparing the Sonos’ digital output with the AppleTV digital signal was an exercise in audiophile frustration. Their output levels were exactly the same, which made it easy to do blind A/B/X testing. No matter how long or how intensely I listened I couldn’t hear any discernible differences between them. I tried MP3, Apple Lossless, and even AIFF files, and in every case both units produced identical sonic signatures. Soundstage dimensions, low-level details, harmonic balances, and dynamic capabilities were utterly indistinguishable from one to the other. During my forays onto the Internet in search of technical and anecdotal information on the Sonos system I’ve come across plenty of heated exchanges between Logitech Squeezebox and Sonos users about which system is better. Having used both, I have my own take on this. It makes a far less pronounced difference here than it does on Sonos’s wireless speakers, but we do find that with Loudness switched off the Amp has just a little more organic roundedness to its delivery, particularly in vocals. You may find, though, that in your room or with your specific speakers, Loudness produces the preferable performance. Sonos Play:5 review". What Hi-Fi?. 31 December 2009 . If you're an audiophile, then the idea of the Connect will be much more compelling than the Connect:Amp. The inclusion of the digital output enables users to connect their own Digital Analog Converter (DAC) for a potential sound quality upgrade. While the Logitech Squeezebox Touch saw very little benefit from an outboard DAC -- its onboard sound is that good -- there was room for improvement with the Connect. As I outlined in the Connect:Amp review, the interface does have some niggles, but as the Connect isn't amplified the touchy volume control doesn't matter as much. Since at home I use a mix of local lossless files and Spotify almost exclusively, I only wish that the Spotify integration was better. The Logitech Squeezebox's software is more powerful, offering most of the features of the desktop Spotify app and if you use this service often I'd suggest getting the Touch instead (while you still can). Realistically, this is an issue affecting all smart products, from speakers to TVs. If anything, the fact Sonos has supported older products for far longer than many other companies, and many people still love their older Sonos devices, has inadvertently served to make Sonos' future support issue a much bigger deal than it is for other companies. These rumours aren't baseless either. They're grounded in patent filings, Sonos acquiring a firm specialising in Bluetooth audio and a recent callout for ad firms to help with a major new launch "in an established category", among others.Otherwise, though, the Amp is designed to be more flexible than the Connect:Amp when it comes to powering third-party speakers, most notably in the increase in power from 55W to 125W. This makes it far more capable of powering bigger, more demanding speakers. In July 2012, Sonos Studio announced the "Light House", an interactive structure that was paired with the Play:3 and SUB speakers and was hosted by The Crystal Method. [7] In September 2014, another software update gave the Play:5, plus the Play:3, Play:1 and Playbar independence to run SonosNet through Wi-Fi without connecting a Bridge, Boost or itself by Ethernet to a router [8] following a public beta test for the feature. [9] In September 2015, Sonos announced the redesigned, second-generation Play:5 alongside the tuning software, Trueplay. [10] Features [ edit ] In the app, you can assign each speaker to a room of your house, programme it so the volume can be controlled via your TV's standard remote, and add your favourite streaming services.
