Description

Mulching attachment doesn’t strictly ‘mulch’ the grass in the traditional sense, though it is a step up from simply discharging. It would probably be better described as a ‘discharge aid’ This Mountfield petrol lawn mower is powered by a 160cc overhead valve engine. It has an auto-choke system which is designed to make the machine easy to start. Self-Propelled All possible cutting modes are provided for, with a collection bag and mulch plug both included as standard. You can also of course opt for discharge mode instead by removing both items completely. The grass bag itself is massive 60 litres, the perfect accompaniment to the 51 cm cutting length. This will enable to work fast and with minimal interruption. Although having said that the angle at which the grass bag sits does mean the bag won’t fill to maximum capacity before it starts to shed grass rather than collect it, so this is definitely an area for improvement in the design. The good news is that Mountfield has an instructional video on their YouTube channel which shows you exactly how to do it.

Speaking of the wheels, they’re set outside of the width of the cutting blade. This means you need to be very careful when cutting the edges of your lawn. Should the wheels fall off the edge of your lawn you could end up scalping the edges. Filling it with oil and fuel is also very easy with the filler holes on top of the engine. On some lawn mowers, the filler caps can be put in silly places that make filling them up more difficult than it needs to be. The Mountfield SP53 is powered by a Mountfield 166cc 4 stroke engine, providing sufficient amount of power for larger lawns. Mountfield SP53 Engine Engine Brand The Mountfield SP41 is an excellent, self-propelled petrol mower which is fairly cheap but cuts beautifully. Setting the mowing height is dead easy. The lever is on the rear right wheel as you stand behind it. Selecting one of the five height settings is very smooth with no catching or jamming.

Thanks to a very efficient cutting system which includes an adjustable cutting system with 6 heights to choose from to deliver a precise cut like no other, a wide 51 cm cutting width to cover more grass within a shorter space of time and a large 60 litre grass collector which ensures the user a cleaner mowing experience whilst reducing the need to empty as frequently thanks to its capacious size. Furthermore the collector also includes an indicator to inform the user when the bag is full. There is no primer button or manual choke on the ST170. I was not expecting it to start on the first pull of the recoil cord, but was pleasantly surprised when it did. Subsequently, throughout my testing the Mountfield SP53 started first time every time. The level of smoke produced from the engine was minimal, as you would expect from a 4 stroke petrol engine.

It would also be nice to have some speed control. You have either a choice of idle or full steam ahead with nothing in between. It’s not a major issue and it’s not like it pulls you along. It would just be nice to have that bit extra control over the speed. The Mountfield SP51H is a tough, dependable and easy to use a stylish mower. Self-propelled with power to the rear wheels, there is no need to push, making this an ideal mower for maintaining your lawn with minimal effort, especially if it has slopes. Powered by an industry leading 145cc Honda OHV Autochoke engine, it has a 51cm cutting width and 6 cutting heights ranging from 22-80mm. It is also fitted with a cone clutch transmission (DSC) for smooth acceleration. The SP51H has a deep drawn pressed steel chassis giving superior strength and collecting ability. This mower has a 39cm cutting width and a 40-litre grass collection bag which makes it a good option for small to medium sized lawns up to 400sq meters.First impressions were very good, but what is the performance of the Mountfield SP53? Does it continue to impress whilst in action? Engine: 160cc, 4-stroke; Cutting Width: 51cm; Grass Box Capacity: 60 Litres; Self-Propelled: Yes; Weight: 35kg; Self-Propelled: Yes; Warranty: 2 Years; Let me start by talking about Mountfield. We all know that they have a strong brand and good reputation for designing and producing great quality garden tools and lawn mowers over many years. This is another reason I was looking forward to testing one of their largest petrol lawn mowers currently available, the Mountfield SP53. If you have a large lawn you will for sure want to know that this mower is built to last and will be able to deal with slopes, uneven lawns and challenging areas in your garden efficiently and with minimum effort on your part. Mountfield began manufacturing rotary lawnmowers at premises in Maidenhead in 1962; the modern, high specification machines of today bear little resemblance to their ancestors, but all share a common ethos of quality and value for money - which has helped to make Mountfield the UK’s No.1 for over 50 years.
