Take your time and use your hands to feel for any tangles along the way to guide you. You can always split a brushing session up into smaller sessions if your dog is getting frustrated (or if you are). Try to get your Poodle used to brushing and other grooming tasks as early as possible to reduce stress for you both. Additional Grooming There isn’t an additional layer between the topcoat and the skin, so just be sure not to irritate your pet’s skin. What Are the Different Types of Poodle Coats? Many of the tools discussed here come in various sizes and styles. You should try to choose tools that are designed for your dog’s size and coat type. For example, if you have a small, shorthaired dog, you probably don’t need a pin brush or a rake; but a grooming glove could be very handy. If you have a longhaired dog, you probably need a pin brush. Virtually every dog owner does need to have a good comb and bristle brush.

A good quality Pin Brush – not one with bobbles on the end of the pins as they split the ends of the hair. Ideally the pins will be precision machined brass (which causes less static than steel). They need to have rounded ends to the pins so they do not scratch the skin. Before you groom your dog with the brush (and ideally in the shop before you buy it even) try the brush on your forearm. Brush your arm reasonably firmly – if your arm feels scratched and sore then that is how your puppy will feel all over if you use that brush. Good quality pin brushes will not scratch you and will ease tangles out without causing too much pain to your puppy. Many pet owners do not want the work of keeping a Havanese in full, show coat, so prefer a shortened coat that will be easier to brush and maintain. The most popular option is to have the coat clipped or scissored to a uniform length all over. Your groomer can help you decide which length is best according to your grooming skills and inclination as well as the appearance that you wish to maintain. If longer hair appeals to you, but there is just too much of it, you can have it layered 3 to 4 inches all over, with the feet rounded and the hair around the eyes trimmed. This is easier to manage, but must be combed out several times a week. Anal Glands However, some sensitive dogs really get antsy with this brush, and definitely be careful around delicate areas like legs. It’s only for use in dogs with double coats because the blade can be irritating next to the skin. If your dog with an undercoat also has sensitive skin, we do not recommend using a de-shedding tool, but this one is suitable for most dogs and available in three sizes so you can find the one that gives you the most control.

How to Brush a Poodle: Step by Step Guide

Make the Poodle turn towards you and brush the front of the chest. Don’t forget to brush under their armpits because that area is most prone to mats and tangles. If you’re looking for the best brush for standard Poodles, you’ll want the head of the brush to be bigger to make grooming time efficient. However, if you need the best brush for toy Poodles, a smaller brush will be more suitable and ensure you can access those hard-to-reach areas. Durability Silicone or rubber dog brushes can be used on most dog coat types and dogs love being brushed with them, so they are also perfect for dogs who usually run a mile when they see the hairbrush come out. When I get the rubber brush out my dogs come racing over, ready for some pampering. Rubber brushes are gentle against your dog's skin, they stimulate and massage and feel great for your dog. They are also good at catching loose fur and debris and making the coat look and feel fabulous. Did you know you can use this type of rubbery brush wet or dry so you can use them at bath time too, to get the shampoo or product into the coat and also help relax your dog at bath time as they will enjoy the massage action of these brushes. Woof!

The wooden pin brush, while I don’t think it would be great for a Newfie with an adult coat, I do think it would be a great starter brush for a puppy, for a dog that has been clipped for the summer or for a dog with sensitive skin. Not only do they cut down on static but they glide through hair, hold up longer and are better for the coat. Pin Brush...nice for daily maintenance of the top coat. Won't go too deep, and clogs up fairly often with Chow fur. Good for smoothing out any fly away type fur. Although at face value it may not seem that there is any difference in which brush you buy for your pet, this shows that in fact there can be a range of factors which cause you to use one or the other. There seems to be an endless supply of brushes and grooming products out there for dogs. How do you know which brushes are best for your Poodle?

How often should I brush my dog?

Due to its long, wire bristles – it is not designed for those with shorter hair as it may be more irritating to the skin. Let’s look at a few different combs and brush types, and identify what kind of coat they might be best for. This type of dog brush is one of my personal favourites. I think these are also referred to as Curry brushes, but don't quote me on that.
