Sunbathing and Swimming: The golden sands of Portobello Beach are perfect for sunbathing, and if you’re brave enough, you can take a dip in the North Sea. Just be aware that the water temperature can be cold even in the summer months so a wetsuit is recommended. For the walk itself, head out of the town going north. You'll need to follow the road for about 10 minutes, then turn right and follow the signs.

One of the most notable features of Yellowcraig Beach is the view of Fidra Island which lies just offshore. This small island is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island, but today it’s preserved as a seabird sanctuary and is home to many bird species including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. Spencerfield Spirit Co. was founded by Alex and Jane Nicol in 2005. The husband and wife team initially focussed on whisky, using Alex’s knowledge of the market from his time at Beefeater and Glenmorangie to build the brand. Towards the middle of the beach near the Tumbles Gymnastics Centre, visitors can view the Portobello Pottery Kilns, two traditional bottle kilns that are the last remaining examples of their type in Scotland, while 1/3 mile to the south they’ll find the Portobello Swim Centre, a historic Victorian building that houses a modern 25-metre swimming pool and a traditional Turkish bath. Getting to Ayr beach by train is really easy. There are frequent services running from Glasgow Central that take around 55 minutes. It’s then just a short signposted walk from the station to the seafront. Troon
