Description

This story starts with a simple marital spat, an argument between two people who love each other deeply, but let emotion control them for just a day. Not much time, but in that period, Wendy Gould (the wife) almost sleeps with another man. Almost--she stops herself in time, but can't get out of the hotel room before her potential paramour is murdered and she must kill a Federal agent to save her own life. She flees for home and confides in her husband--the bad and the ugly--but before they can tell her story to the police, he is killed and she must run for her life from a rogue federal agent.

Throwing herself into her work and being there for her friends and her family, Audrey hopes that her life will sort itself out soon, and when sexy Daniel shows his interest in her, Audrey is flattered. And the more time she spends with him, the better she begins to feel about her fresh start. But Daniel has his own baggage that is about to collide with Audrey...Nico sends his love.” The coded phrase he had been waiting for. He had been waiting for days. Finally, Caroline McNeal was dead. Lauritzia escaped from Mexico and is working as a nanny for a family she loves and who love her. She is going to school and has dreams of opening her own store one day. But her dreams are shattered with a shooting in the mall and she knows the bullets were meant for her. She wants to run to protect the family but they convince her to stay so they can help her. Mary is living in poverty where her mum has to do anything she can to just feed and house them. She finds herself stealing an apple to eat and asking how her mums got money when the wages that her dad sent home was very little. Her death seems eerily similar to the suspicious fatality of a young socialite years before. Is the similarity of the two tragic incidents simply a coincidence, or could it be a sign of a murderous orchestrated plot to protect those in the highest echelons of the American government?

As written, the book is really three different yet related books in one: (1) the major crisis, (2) the victim on the run, and (3) the metamorphosis and series setup. This thriller shows you how to write a thriller, great characters, great story and very cleverly bring the stories together, with some really great supporting roles for Harold and Roxanne, and some very nasty baddies. I liked that the writer tied a true event within the story's main plot (again I don't like to give spoilers) but other than that to me there wasn't a whole lot special about it. I am afraid in time I will forget about this story altogether. This is a fast-paced race through one failed solution after another, as Wendy attempts to unravel clues and extricate herself before she is found by those chasing her. It is fascinating to see how ordinary people handle life-threatening situations. Though Wendy is an ex-cop, she is now a housewife of two adult children. Fighting armed killers and drug lords (part of the second plot line) is not in her daily domestic duties. Early in the book, I was annoyed by the overlapped plot lines. They jumped around in time without clear notice to the reader, but that resolved itself by the halfway mark and I never thought of it again. This book overall to me was okay. I thought, without giving spoilers, that it was generally presented in a simplistic style and with its many twists and turns. This was good but nothing earth shattering. I wasn't happy with Daniel's daughter and her actions at a certain point and I wasn't sure what the truth of some events were. Was Daniel lying? Who knows?

I loved the writing style, there was loads going on, I thought this was well written as it can be easy to loose the main thread of the story but that didn't happen. This novel is about a married woman who recently had an argument with her husband. She goes to a bar and while there she meets a man. She heads up to his room for a one night stand. Before she knows it she is thrust into a conspiracy that has dire consequences for her. This is your basic thriller novel. The pieces start falling together at the end as to what's going on and I was happy with the ending for the most part. Not to give anything away, I wasn't buying the possible love connection that was hinted at, though. Really? It had only been four months.

I was intrigued by Audrey, not just because of her name (I went to school with an Audrey in the 1950s), but also because of the wonderful picture on the cover of the book RED SHOES!!! I have always loved red shoes so had to read the story. I wasn't disappointed either. Having read most of Kelly Florentia's previous stories I knew I was in for a great read with this one. As the bodies start to pile up, Wendy digs into her case and discovers connections that lead her to a Mexican nanny with a dangerous past. What a fascinating story, I could have continued reading from this story I’d of loved to have read the story of her settling in Australia properly. Wow so so interesting and so different. Gruesomely realistic, intriguing and relentless. Arlidge's fledgling army of fans is about to grow' I couldn’t predict what was going to happen in this story, the countless twists made the second half much more compelling. Even down to the last line there’s a twist which now leaves me dribbling with delight for the next episode. (Cheers Kelly!).

The one thing Wendy doesn't count on is that an attractive man in the bar approaches her during one of her most vulnerable times in her marriage. She loves the attention he provides and when her friend Pam calls to tell her she can't meet her, Wendy makes the mistake of leaving the bar with the man knowing the choice she makes tonight will alter her life forever. When she arrives in his apartment, she suddenly comes to grip with her moral conviction and kindly tells Curtis that she needs to go home before things go any further than simply being in his apartment. Take time to mourn. Take time to remember the good times. Time is indeed a good healer." - J.B. Turner Wendy Gould, a former police officer, had a major argument with her husband one evening. She made plans to meet a girlfriend at a bar the next evening to talk to her. Long story short: Her friend doesn’t show up, texts her that she can’t make it, and Wendy; for the first time in her life, goes up to the hotel room with a very handsome, talented, nice man. What happens next is not what she, or the reader expects. Wendy witnesses his murder, kills a federal agent, and has to flee to protect herself and her family. As of the characters, there are two female main characters. One I felt a little sympathy but the other one I could care less. Not a good sign when the reader is along for her adventure and is suppose to root for her. She irked me more than anything else.
