His intention to devote himself to watercolour painting was perhaps not so suprising in the light of his life-long affinity with nature and sketching. Once in London, securing commissions proved difficult and he began to grow increasingly reclusive due to his declining mental health and financial strains. Meanwhile, his wife grew increasingly more social, hanging out with the bohemian art crowd in the city at night. These were often interpreted as having sexual undertones and meanings by guests, which was indicative of the difference in interpretation between those from within the movement, and those looking in. However, this might have been an intentional choice, meant to act as a controversial conversation piece intended to draw potential clients into the tearooms.Isabella studied at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English Literature & Language and Psychology. Throughout her undergraduate years, she took Art History as an additional subject and absolutely loved it. Building on from her art history knowledge that began in high school, art has always been a particular area of fascination for her. From learning about artworks previously unknown to her, or sharpening her existing understanding of specific works, the ability to continue learning within this interesting sphere excites her greatly.

The first of the unexecuted Gate Lodge, Auchinbothie (1901) sketches [24] was realised as a mirrored pair of gatehouses to either side of the Achnabechan [25] and The Artist's Cottage drives, also at Farr by Inverness. Known as North House and South House, these were completed 1995–7. [26] [27] The McIntoshes belonged to the upper echelon of the working class. William McIntosh had a steady, respectable job and, perhaps, an instinct for betterring himself (…) While there, not only did his personal philosophies and aesthetics begin to emerge, but also his increasing aversion to compromise in groups. His position at the company was further strained when his engagement with Kelpie’s sister was broken off due to his mood swings and erratic behavior. He would meet his next wife, Margaret Macdonald in 1892, a respected artist in her own right. This reflected his desire for his architecture to represent an integrated whole, where unifying the building into a single entity was more important than any single aspect on its own. I went along to a planting day at the park for families who have lost someone or been affected and we just began talking and I think this is something that could really help people.” Macintyre, Robert Hamilton (Spring 1992). "An Artist's Cottage and Studio". CRM Society Newsletter (Glasgow), No 58, p5-8. Among those involved in creating the poses are bereaved relatives Peter McMahon and Carolyn Murdoch. The House for An Art Lover (1901) was built in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow after his death (1989–1996). [19] Derngate, Northampton (interior design and architectural remodelling for Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke, founder of Bassett-Lowke) These images were all meant to represent symbolic references used by the avant-garde Symbolist movement. Some of the furniture included was in fact brought from the couple's Mains Street flat, whilst other pieces were made especially for the space. A magazine at the time, The Studio commented on the spirituality of the installation; "The composition forms an organic whole... the effect of sweet repose filling the soul." Muthesius, writing for Die Kunst, praised this installation as having "a seminal influence on the emerging new vocabulary of forms, especially and continuously in Vienna." He who has taken lessons from nature...has observed the real purpose and operation of flowers; how they flush forth from the brightness of the earth's being. ~John Ruskin Menu card design for Miss Cranston’s Cafes at the 1911 Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry, c. 1911; Margaret MacDonald, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Some of the drawings are of native species, but many are cultivated. A little surprising, many were drawn, not in his native Scotland as you might expect, but in Sussex where he traveled a few times a year to visit friends and escape the pressures of his architectural firm. The color is pure watercolor over pencil, not opaque. They seem almost like meditations. His trademark images adorn everything from calendars to tea mugs and examples of his original work – including chairs, tables and cutlery – are among the most collectable of any Scottish artist. With both of these projects, the clients gave him total creative freedom to do as he wished, resulting in incredibly beautiful designs such as the Willow Tearooms. These spaces were intended by Cranston to be a haven where people could enjoy tea while appreciating and discussing art. Hall, Michael (26 November 1992). "The Artist's Cottage, Inverness". Country Life (London), p34-37. Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), South House, Canmore ID 280056 As a teenager, he attended Allen Glen High, and even at that age displayed a great ability to produce technical drawings and architectural designs. He enrolled at Glasgow’s School of Art for part-time courses at the age of 15, serving as an apprentice to John Hutchinson, and collaborating in commissions for the next 10 years. Despite receiving much support from his relatives, they were concerned that he was overworking himself. While at the School of Art, he also trained to be a painter under Francis Newberry, the institution’s director.
