Ann Moura is quite a well-known author in the world of Witchcraft and Wicca. Ann writes books with a whole range of topics from the well known ‘Green Witch’ books and on other things such as Wicca, being a solitary witch and how to protect or look after yourself. The Minor Arcana is explained further in detail, giving you easy to understand information about a particular card. On the 9 of Athames, I like that the artist hasn’t positioned the swords above the lady. Their position above the window highlights that her fears, worries, and/or negative thoughts are linked more to how she’s seeing things rather than to her actual “reality”. Therefore we are reminded we can choose to see how we are seeing things in a new light.

One way to utilize The Green Witch Tarot for personal growth is through daily card pulls. This involves pulling a card each day and reflecting on its meaning and how it relates to your current experiences and challenges. This can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you. For example, if you pull the "Nine of Pentacles" card, which represents financial abundance and self-sufficiency, you may take this as a sign to focus on cultivating a sense of independence and financial stability in your life. Other sections you can take or leave dependent upon your beliefs. For example, I’m not intentionally splashing water on my cards to consecrate them. But that doesn’t mean I readily dismiss other suggestions. I enjoy reading about other’s approaches, practices and beliefs. I take an eclectic approach to tarot so I believe there is much to be gained in learning about how other’s view and work with the cards. I integrate what I connect with and leave the rest. My own practices and personal rituals have changed considerably over the years which I don’t find surprising since I’m definitely not the same person I was nearly 25 years ago. Therefore, I never discount anything out of hand. Some things I have felt a bit silly for trying felt completely natural once I did. Other things don’t gel at all and I accept that. What role do we play in our struggles? Have we been too proud, too stubborn, too caught up in our own particular beliefs that prevent us from asking for help? Or, was it something we had to go through on our own for any number of reasons. This highlights one of the reasons I love journaling using a single card. It allows me to uncover so many possible meanings because so many thoughts and ideas I have buried, ignored, or never considered come bubbling up to the surface. I find these cards offer a safe space to launch from. It is worth noting that while The Green Witch Tarot can be a powerful tool for spellwork and rituals, it is important to approach this practice with respect and mindfulness. Tarot cards are not inherently magical or enchanted, but they can serve as a tool to help us tap into our own intuition and connect with the natural energies of the earth. It is also important to remember that spells and rituals should always be performed with the highest intentions and with the understanding that we are co-creating with the natural world, rather than seeking to control or manipulate it.I love how the cards are rich with story. Although it is not the most happy card, I can’t help but be drawn into the story of the Four of Chalices, pictured here: Animal Guides: Animals are also prominent in the Green Witch Tarot and are often depicted as spirit guides or messengers. The different phases of the moon are depicted in many cards, such as the High Priestess or the Moon card. Each phase has its own symbolism, adding depth and nuance to the interpretation of the cards. Number 13 for example, known as the ‘Death’ card is ‘The Lord of the Shadows’ and less of a scary card, signifying change. For example, the Cups are called Chalices and the Swords are called Athames. The Green Witch Tarot encourages us to cultivate a strong connection to the earth and to draw upon its energy in our spiritual practice.

The companion guide is well written, but very short. I’d have loved to have full descriptions of the reversed card meanings (instead of keywords) and correspondences. For example, 0 is the Greenman and shown as the God of Nature, rather than the ‘Fool’ and the meanings between the 2 cards are completely different. I wasn’t initially sure about the approach to the 3 of Athames but it has grown on me. As the lady walks towards her house you can see it’s in need of repair and the door is ajar. Has she been robbed? Did she forget to close the door? Did she deliberately leave it open? To be honest I can’t tell you if these ideas come to mind like they do because of my tarot knowledge or whether they are based purely of the card’s imagery. Either way, I find the messages powerful and worthy of contemplation. What’s going on? What role does she have to play in the situation? And what decisions is she going to make about the best way forward? The presence of the swan adds another layer for me. Even though the book ascribes transformation, change, quest and manifestation to the swan, that is not what comes to mind for me. For me, the swan represents grace and therefore I predominantly read the card through that lens, yet I don’t complete dismiss the creator’s associations because they can add another layer.

Their function is to provide a means for a reader to access the psychic intuition that is naturally present in all people but is more developed in some than others. At the start of the book, you get some really lovely tips on grounding, centering, consecrating, and how to read the tarot. Now, this is what I call a real guide book!

The Crone:~ We see the Crone in this serene scene with her astrological counterpart Leo. Her lion is tame when he is by her side for he knows that she has nothing but compassion and love for him in her heart, but woe betide any and all who cross her for they will face the wrath of Leo in all his fury. Contrary to popular modern belief compassion is not a weakness to be used and abused, but it is a strength and it has power far greater than anything physical or metaphysical for that matter. The lion in this card stands for power, authority, courage and inner strength. The Crone carries a staff of hawthorn which is imbued with male (yang) energy, yet it is symbolic of fertility and is historically associated with the triple goddess aspect Mother, Maiden, Crone. “A contradiction in terms” I here you say, well with that in mind Hawthorn stands testament to dualities. Tied to the top this staff of Hawthorn is a bunch of Angelica which in itself is an allegory of power and strength. Like most companion guides, the book describes each card in detail and then shares keywords for the upright and reversed meanings. This book really shines in the descriptions, though. This is not boring boilerplate. The author includes a description of the animal and plant life illustrated on each card and is adept at wrapping together the tarot card meanings, stories, symbols, and emotions. Design-wise, the cards are more bright and subtle. Looking like they came right out of a fantasy book with beautiful artwork.
