While many of Harry’s experiences are obviously unique, what strikes me about Harry and his writing is how relatable he is. Of course I’m not royal, I haven’t had a significant loss, I haven’t served in the military. I have experienced toxic and challenging relationships, I have experienced feeling misunderstood, invalidated, and unheard. Muir, Ellie (6 January 2023). "Prince Harry says he had a 'frostbitten penis' at William and Kate's wedding". The Independent. Archived from the original on 6 January 2023 . Retrieved 7 January 2023. The rest of the book is basically Harry implying he's somehow now "better" than the rest of the cruel, racist, corrupt, criminal, bloodthirsty royal institution he used to be a part of (and in reality still is).

Whose safety do you really care about? The second issue I have is that Harry left the UK to allegedly keep his family safe. I say allegedly because the narrative keeps changing. Even after reading the book, I am still unclear what the current version of events are and what his story is today. At what point will he be or was he telling the truth?a b Ward, Victoria (3 January 2023). "Duke of Sussex 'wrong' to claim King Charles not willing to reconcile". The Telegraph. Archived from the original on 3 January 2023 . Retrieved 3 January 2023. The BBC's royal correspondent Sean Coughlan called the book the "weirdest book ever written by a royal", and "part-confession, part-rant and part-love letter". [78] He also described it as "disarmingly frank and intimate – showing the sheer weirdness of [Harry's] often isolated life", adding "it's the small details, rather than the set-piece moments that give a glimpse of how little we really knew." [78] In a review for Sky News, Katie Spencer wrote that in the book "There are moments where your heart breaks, when he talks of desperately wanting to be hugged – but then there are petulant musings, immature bragging and catty explanations, making it a little hard to stay on Harry's side." [79] She adds that Harry has shared some personal details that "quite frankly, we didn't need to know" and make the book "both tender and bizarrely unrelatable". Some have defended Harry by saying "at least it's good that he owns up to it" and "he seems to have learned from it".All in all, there is too much to write. This book is nothing special, nor is it terrible. It is simply dull. a b Coughlan, Sean (10 January 2023). "Spare review: The weirdest book ever written by a royal". BBC News. Archived from the original on 10 January 2023 . Retrieved 10 January 2023. Here is my deep concern. By publishing a kill count of 25 Taliban fighter’s aka chess pieces (in his own words) he has increased the risk to himself, his family, and many others in military service. I find this abhorrent and immoral, because every death is someone’s child, father, brother, or friend, and even in war we should respect that. What prudent person publishes a tally? My GR friends may recall, I recently read Diamond Eye, where the MC was a female sniper and whilst a heroine in the eyes of many, she actually kept a body count of her kills which did not sit well with me, for the same reason. Respect. Who does that? Yet once again Harry takes no responsibility and has since tried to change the narrative by blaming the press for manipulating his words despite the fact that this sordid comment is written by him in his own memoir. Oh, and then he goes to a hallucinogenic Vietnam-dimension discovered by cats (not joking) and takes more drugs.

Harry mentions that both he and his brother had agreed on welcoming Charles's lover Camilla Parker Bowles into their family on the condition that their father did not marry her. [17] He alleges that Camilla "sacrificed" him "on her personal PR altar" to improve her own public image and leaked "minute details" of a conversation she had with William to the press. [29] He alleges that William "felt tremendous guilt" for not speaking up about their father's affair with Camilla, and he had "long harboured suspicions about the Other Woman." [30] He adds that William was left "confused" and "tormented" as a result of the affair. [30] Harry also says that Camilla had "played a role" in his mother's death because she had been "pivotal" in the disintegration of his parents' marriage. [29] He likened his first time meeting her to "getting an injection" and added Camilla was "bored," partly because Harry was not Charles's heir and could not be a threat to her desires for marrying his father. [29] Harry says that his father found happiness after marrying Camilla, and that he wanted both his father and Camilla to be happy, wondering if "she was less dangerous being happy." [29] Harry also states that Camilla turned his bedroom at Clarence House into her dressing room as soon as he left. [31] He also talks about Charles's experience at Gordonstoun, where Harry claims his father was bullied and "almost did not survive." [29] He discusses his father's attachment to his teddy bear, which helped him through Gordonstoun and remained one of his favourite objects as an adult, a representation of "the essential loneliness of his childhood." A lot of the concepts were good, very good even, but that clumsy patchiness of the writing style really detracted from the concepts. If the narrative had been able to carry me along I would have had less time to think about similar books and movies and it would have been better. As it was the poor writing saw me losing interest and often putting the book down to do other things and I always had an inner monologue of where I had seen the concepts before.
