Description

We say ‘simple’ in that it is, of course, off-the-chart ABBA-complex, with further stunning depth only revealed with careful repeated listening.

It’s easy to forget what an electronic band ABBA were, with synths driving Voulez-Vouz, being perfected through Super Trouper and giving way to prominence on The Visitors. It’s all over The Visitors album, bringing the swinging, sawing strings and flickering brass to Head Over Heels. Released in 1993, it was the follow-up to the highly successful Gold: Greatest Hits, released the previous year, and went on to sell 3 million copies. These were included here as well as some of ABBA's lesser-known hits from the time when their popularity was declining, such as " Head over Heels" and " The Day Before You Came.

This version contains the original versions of The Name Of The Game and Voulez-Vous, and the Australian / New Zealandese edition still featured its own tracks instead of the international tracks. Keen to recreate Spector’s famous ‘Wall of Sound’, Tretow recorded the song’s backing track, then rewound the tape, changing its speed slightly, before recording the entire track again. In 1999, Gold: Greatest Hits was remastered by Jon Astley and released with the cover art notably featuring the band members' signatures.Despite the the heavy vinyl quality and quite replay experience, this remaster sounds flat and lifeless. The keyboard itself weighed 300kg, while the optional pedal board and seat (yes, seat) added another 87kg. In 2008 the album was re-released with a different disc and back cover to coincide with the release of the film Mamma Mia!

It not only highlights [Abba's] incredible popularity, but just how closely they have connected with a succession of new generations. Err… Except we know what ABBA sound like in 2021 and - frankly - we’ll take Something In Your Eyes over Don’t Shut Me Down any day.

In fact, such was the band’s disappointment in its performance that when UK electronic band Blancmange proposed a near-identical (and near-pointless) cover version in 1984, ABBA publicly endorsed the track to the degree that they even allowed the band to hijack parts of their video, with Agnetha now appearing to share a train with Blancmange’s Neil Arthur, rather than her nameless love interest in the original. This version of the disc contains the US promo edit of The Name Of The Game and a new, shortened version of Voulez-Vous edited specificially for the disc.
