After hiking in the woods of Ralph Stover, with its palette of heavy greens and subtle reds, I decided to test my new film in different settings. I took a roll to the coast of Sea Isle City, New Jersey. Like any shore town, it’s a place loaded with heavy blues and varieties of light pastels, comfort colors. My father and I drove around until we found something interesting to shoot. We pulled over at the foot of the bridge that connects the shore points of Sea Isle City and Avalon.With its relatively affordable price to go along with its good image quality and qualities, you can get out shooting without worrying quite as much about wasted frames as you might with the aforementioned other professional Kodak films. Ektar” is a name Kodak has been reserving for its premium products since 1936 . Up until 1960, Ektar belonged to a series of the brand’s top-end lenses. A lot of people don’t like this modern architecture due to boring lines and repetition, a vast lump of concrete. But to architecture photographers it’s everything you can ask for.

Of the portrait work I've done with Ektar most of it has been done with caucasian skin tones. Under natural light, such as shade or window light, skin remains pleasantly warm. Notatably, oranges and blues stand out the most. Be warned, it isn't that difficult to have the oranges shift into reds from changing light or over aggressive post processing. Even with that I overall enjoy the general spirited and fiery look Ektar can give to a portrait shoot. Whenever those measurements were taken, the observing distance was set to 14” from the print. However, the print enlargements varied, and so did the negatives which the enlargements were made from. Not all street photography has to be in monochrome. Indeed, if you’re in a place with lots of colour, it can be a shame not to take advantage of that. And as long as you have enough light for its ISO 100 rating, the sharpness, contrast, and low grain make Ektar a fine film to do so. All that is to say this film gives you a slightly different feel to the consumer-grade colour Kodak films I’ve shot before, with less of that trademark warm Kodak glow. The colours are more neutral than that, being a little more lifelike despite their vividness.

For a really long time, if you wanted very vivid colors in your film photos you needed to go to a slide film–but when Kodak introduced Kodak Ektar 100 things changed. Photographers were able to get punchy, vibrant, saturated colors with the ease of use that negative film provides. However it is also in use for portraiture as its low ISO value allows for incredibly sharp photos. The first thing that needs to be said as we wrap up this Pro Image 100 review is a big thank you to Kodak for bringing it to the European and North American markets so that more people can more easily get their hands on some and try it out for themselves. This image and the one below was shot with the Mamiya 7 II, and considering the tungsten lighting inside of the wedding hall that I was in, it did a pretty good job. This was done with all natural light. As a film produced to be sold in some hot and humid regions, Pro Image 100 is said to stand up well to high temperatures, albeit to the slight detriment of the results it gives when compared to other Kodak Professional films.

Image #1 had the better exposure of the two. In this image, you can see the vibrance of the blues in Melissa’s dress as the warm morning sunlight flows through it. You can also see the sunlight slightly lighting up her arm which is a nice subtle touch. Although I wish there was more light on her ring, the image overall turned out pretty good. These two images were shot one after another and gives you a good idea about what the colors look like when you slightly underexpose the film.Granularity is virtually nonexistent. Before Ektar was around, Kodak’s finest-grain film came in the form of their professional Ektachrome E100G, and Kodak’s literature on Ektar explains that the new film was developed with foresight in regard to the relationship between Ektachrome and Ektar. Predicting the diminished availability of slide-film processing, the company intended that the modern Ektar should rival (and even trump) the previous pro-grade offering. Again, Kodak succeeded. It’s clear when comparing s The red flags, green trees and yellow helmet on the third image are other examples of the high saturation. However, while I suppose it’s possible the guy has a nice tan from riding around in the sun all day, it probably wasn’t to the extent that shot makes it appear. I can always count on Ektar for its fine grain and beautiful pops of color. This makes it an ideal film landscapes, architecture, and anything outside on a bright sunny day.

The bottom line for me is you get all that image quality in a colour negative film that can be developed anywhere using the common C-41 process and for not too bad a price. The simple explanation for this is that Europe and North America are not the world and this is not a new film. In fact, it’s been available in other markets – most notably Asia and South America – since 1997.

This film also seems to have a resounding sharpness about it. It is smooth and crips on edges and textures feel almost life like. It’s pure and solid, providing an image that rivals most DSLRs on the market. I would even dare to say it pulls details that try to take on my 50 megapixel EOS 5DS. It’s not quite that level of sharpness and resolution, but it’s not too far off. I can comfortable scan this film at 3600 and 6400 in most cases and it still feels sharp and beautiful. Uniquely beautiful results with amazingly true colours for a colour negative film, fine details & excellent skin tones Indeed, this is a fine film for silky-smooth, detailed images to be printed big or cropped tightly. What grain? This film is advertised as the worlds finest grain color film by Kodak. It doesn’t disappoint, and I haven’t shot enough color film to argue this point. It’s a very fine grain that almost looks like slide film in it’s granularity. Despite the low grain, there is great detail. I was always told that “details live in the grain.” For some reason, this film pulls off stunning detail without appearing to have any grain at all.The low grain makes this great for macro work or landscapes. its ability to pull out tremendous amounts of detail where even my eyes could distinguish it. Now the grain can show up if you push the film and also if you edit it too much. You won’t notice it much in general use. If there were flash output added to this scene, it would have looked far different. With that said though, you can still see how well it did with holding its tonality.
