Description

While still a teenager, and with no sign of the long-distance romance dwindling, Priscilla’s parents agreed on her returning to the US to take up residence in Memphis in early 1963, under the conditions she finish her education at a local all-girls Catholic school, that she resided in a nearby residence to Graceland chaperoned by Presley’s father, Verne, and his second wife, and that a contract of eventual marriage be honoured. Priscilla Presley had the GREATEST RESPONSIBILITY cast upon her when Vernon Presley died thereby leaving the entire Estate to Lisa Marie (who Priscilla had to care for and make business decisions accordingly).

a b Bergeson, Samantha (November 6, 2023). "Priscilla Presley Has 'No Problems' with Sofia Coppola's Film but Would 'Never Support Another Movie' of Her Life from Anyone Else". IndieWire . Retrieved November 11, 2023. Priscilla Presley was the greatest love of Elvis' adult life and this book clearly conveys many reasons to justify Elvis' love. Her words are heartfelt, sincere, and as "objective" as one could "hope for" under the circumstances. Priscilla tried her best to feign interest in Elvis’ new hobby, but admits that it became difficult once he began withholding sex. He believed giving into his sensual desires was antithetical to his spiritual growth. She recalls nights in which they would take sleeping pills and he would read her metaphysical texts in bed, which didn’t exactly put her in the mood. This nightly routine led Priscilla to blow up at her then fiancé, begging him to spend more time being intimate with her than reading his boring books. Priscilla shows a moment between Elvis and Priscilla in which he tells her they can’t have sex until marriage, but they can do other things. In Elvis and Me, Priscilla writes that they did engage in what she refers to as “intimate circumstances” throughout their seven year relationship, but did not have sexual intercourse until their wedding day in 1976 when she was 21. While that fact may seem rather convenient to some, to this day, Priscilla swears that it was Elvis who didn’t want to have sex until they were man and wife. “People think that was the attraction, it was sex. Not at all,” she said during a press conference earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival. “I never had sex with him [when I was underage]. He was very kind, very soft, very loving. But he also respected the fact I was only 14-years-old.” In a televised interview on January 14, 2005, with Larry King on CNN's Larry King Live, Anita Wood said that following media reports of a girlfriend in Germany, Elvis "had me believing that she (Priscilla) was just a friend, that daddy was in the Army with him, and there was nothing to it, whatsoever."And he would read [out loud to me] and I would be so tired … and he would say, ‘you aren’t listening to me’ and I would say [to myself], ‘okay, keep your eyes open’.”

I enjoyed reading the book, maybe because it was interesting to read about such a famous relationship or just such famous people. It felt like someone was telling me a story in person tbh. Sofia Coppola is a personal filmmaker whose work follows a thematic through line: her pictures are all, in one way or another, about captivity and isolation. For the characters held captive the cage is often a gilded one, and the cage in search of a bird (in Kafka’s phrase) in “Priscilla” is Elvis Presley. Priscilla discovered that Elvis was reluctant to be intimate with her after she’d gone through childbirth. He told her he wanted her to have time to recover, but as Priscilla later wrote, “He had mentioned before we were married that he had never been able to make love to a woman who’d had a child.” As he had before they were married, Elvis slept with other women. But Priscilla was no longer willing to simply wait for him to come home. This was after she had a bad experience with sleeping pills that put her in a two-day sleep, as depicted in the Coppola film. She said it was “very difficult to watch a film about you and your life and about your love”, but paid tribute to Coppola’s work and research. “And I really put everything out for her that I could,” she said. Priscilla's descriptions of the nights she spent with Elvis, before their marriage, suggest that the star was not overtly sexual towards her. The couple kissed and engaged in petting, but Elvis always stopped the make-out sessions, before it led to actual intercourse. When Elvis returned to the US after serving time in the army, Priscilla said that he asked her to promise to stay "untouched, as I left you." He repeated this as she bid goodbye to him after her first visit to Graceland almost two years later. There are advantages to reading this particular biography. The official version of events is often what is published, but Priscilla is positioned to know the real story, more often than not. For example: when Elvis is drafted, the official story is that, although stars of his caliber are often offered soft assignments that involve singing to the troops, or making inspirational training films, Elvis insisted on doing the same job as every other American man. On the other hand, Priscilla states that this is all his manager’s doing, because it will make Elvis appear noble. Enough new songs were taped in advance for there to be regular new releases on the radio throughout his tour of duty; toward the end, Elvis feigns illness because he’d prefer to be in the hospital being swarmed by nurses than marching around and getting dirty.
