Description

Within the realm of Dragnipur, more and more souls are dying, and the ones left standing are more than aware that Chaos is on the verge of overtaking the wagon. And when that occurs, Draconus, the elder god who forged Dragnipur, is aware that all the realms could be destroyed. He has a desperate plan to face what seems inevitable, but little does he know that a blind Tiste Andii has an agenda of his own.

It is odd, as Amanda says, to think of mischievous Andii children. Though also a bit heartening, this sense of kids being kids. Poor Endest…. Avab Tenitt, a man whose life was 'touched' by Hood (in his mortal form) as he walked the streets of Darujhistan (Mentioned only) [6] Subverted with Nimander and his companions. Clip thinks he can use them as unwitting paws to bring down Anomander Rake, but most of them are perfectly aware of that and only play along because they don't know what else to do. With all this death and despair, it’s a good move to turn to Pust for some humor here before things get overwhelmingly heavy. Oh, this poor High Priestess.

Down the Rabbit Hole: Alluded to and subverted. Harllo, while working at the mines, climbs down a seemingly endless chute, at the bottom of which he meets a T'lan Imass and helps him. However, after that, Dev'ad Anan Tol simply walks away, leaving Harllo behind, and the magic of the discovery dissipates. Especially because the T'lan Imass manages to get himself interred within the Azath grounds immediately. See, Cotillion is definitely the clearer of the two here, when he says: “Perhaps the most telling truth of old friendships is in how their dynamics never change.” He’s quite certain that he and Traveller are still friends. His belief he had “no choice” but to then pen the poor things up in a some isolated tower (more isolation). We’ve had lots of reasons to question Clip’s judgment and this scene with Nimander’s group gives us a more blunt reason to via Nenanda’s statement that Clip “sees what he chooses to see,” which strongly implies he’s blind to quite a bit. We see some coalescing around Nimander here, and the scene also does a nice job of setting up some tension with regard to Desra’s loyalty, as the group disagrees as to which side she will choose when the seemingly inevitable confrontation comes. Challice is a neglected wife, who is now tempted towards a more hedonistic life. We are introduced to a symbol of her feeling of being trapped in the form of a snow globe with a floating bright moon inside. Her husband and his buddies have been discussing Council affairs all night. For some reason, Gorlas thinks he "owns" them because they lust after his wife. They have decided to nominate someone to the council but we are not told who. Meanwhile Humble Measure, the ironmonger has appointed Gorlas as in charge of the iron mines outside the city.

Review: Toll the Hounds by Steven Erikson". NethSpace.blogspot.com. July 2008 . Retrieved 16 October 2016. I love Harllo’s thoughts about Gruntle here—shows how accepting children can be: “But Harllo was learning the tiger’s way, thanks to Uncle Two, whose very skin could change into that of a tiger, when anger awakened cold and deadly. Who had a tiger’s eyes and was the bravest, wisest man in all of Darujhistan.” Pust (followed by some bhok’arala) enters the Shadow Temple, announcing himself as Magus of High House Shadow. Fiddler, a renowned Bridgeburner, famous for his skill in the use of Moranth munitions (Mentioned only) [1] Haradas, a retired Trygalle Trade Guild caravan merchant-mage, now in charge of the Guild's home office in Darujhistan (Mentioned only) [2]

It’s quite upsetting to me that Nimander has ended up in that position thanks to such a sorry character as Clip, and trying to make him whole again.

Anomander Rake, Hood, Shadowthrone and Edgewalker hedge an elaborate plan that will not only relieve Hood of his duties as the God of Death, but free the Gate of Darkness from the wagon within Dragnipur and allow Mother Dark to return to her children again, all while making it impossible for her to ignore Anomander Rake's apology. To make this plan work, both Hood and Anomander Rake stage their own plans: Save Your Deity: What Seerdomin ends up doing for the Redeemer. An interesting case, in that the Redeemer is not actually a god Seerdomin prays to.

Toll the Hounds centers around the legacy of Anomander Rake, Lord of the Tiste Andii, and the convergence of various powers in the city of Darujhistan. The vegetable vendor- is Thordy who doesn't care overmuch about the loss since the lost coin would have gone to her husband's drinking issues. She has a small patch of land where she grows vegetables, she is childless and hates her husband. After years and years, she has somehow decided to murder him and the thought makes her happy. This kelyk is truly insidious, isn’t it? And is it all the tool of the Dying God? A way for him to create worshippers? Friends? Yes, clearly between Cotillion and Traveller (and just how sad is that line of Traveller’s that comes after Cotillion winks at him: “Traveller saw once more—after what seemed a lifetime—the man he had once called his friend” And even sadder, his unwillingness to respond to that feeling). Maybe with Shadowthrone. But at the least, shared experiences, which sometimes binds one tighter than friendship.
