Let me start off by saying that I'm not the biggest fan of character-driven novels, especially when those characters are extremely flawed and unlikable characters. Joanna Ho, New York Times bestselling author of Eyes That Kiss in the Corners, has written an exquisite, heart-rending debut young adult novel that will inspire all to speak truth to power. The way all these different threads came together in the last 10% of the novel or so felt amazing – the ending of Yolk made me go back and forth about whether to round up to five stars for several hours. I will carry them around with me for the rest of forever and I loved getting to have another peak back into their lives. It's told solely from Jayne's perspective, and some might question why Yolk doesn't include June's perspective, especially since Jayne often comes across as unlikable, with her cynical attitude and selfish behavior. I wish that because at times I felt confused about why Jayne and June disliked each other so much and communicated in such hurtful ways. Kae Bahar discussed 'Letters from a Kurd' and his award-winning short film 'I am Sami' with an audience of Eton College students, at the Lower Boy History Society in the Upper School.

The Friction Talks event was presented by James Attlee in association with Film Oxford, and was held at their premises: 54 Catherine St, Oxford, OX4 3AH. And so all of that stuff had to calm down and then I able to distinguish between what was real and what wasn't and just let the book be the book that it was instead of it being the never-ending story where I'm rewriting or, you know, some sort of movie with will Ferrell and narrated by like Emma Thompson or whatever, where I think that I'm writing into my own future. Discussing family sacrifices and expectations within the novel also helps to better understand Jayne’s motivations and her shaky relationship with her parents and sister. I think that the way it happened really strengthened both characters and the overall story being told. What this book does best, I think, is capture the complex ambivalence that characterizes the love between an Asian kid and their immigrant family.

For example, in some species the amount of yolk in an egg cell affects the developmental processes that follow fertilization.

So this book, which is both a) so sad, so filled with suffering, and b) a source of deep and profound confusion to me in terms of what I think about it (and I am someone who cannot feel confused without feeling dumb, and immediately feel angry whenever I feel dumb, in a vicious cycle that makes me seem like an eleven year old boy with a Fortnite addiction and a tendency toward tantrum-throwing). Some types of egg contain no yolk, for example because they are laid in situations where the food supply is sufficient (such as in the body of the host of a parasitoid) or because the embryo develops in the parent's body, which supplies the food, usually through a placenta.littered with anecdotes about jayne and june's small-town korean-american church community, racist incidents that the characters experience, the confining expectations and suffocating pressure, and idiosyncrasies so unique to asian americans, this book felt like a love letter for them.
