New prosthesis styles are being developed all the time, so when you need a replacement it’s a good idea to have a reassessment rather than directly replacing the one you already have. Radiotherapy can sometimes cause your breast to become swollen a little. You may prefer to have your prosthesis fitted when you no longer have any swelling.

It’s a soft ‘shell’ of silicone that fits over your smaller breast so that it matches the larger one. You can wear your usual prosthesis for the occasional swim or make your own swimming prosthesis by cutting an ordinary sponge to fit. However if you are a regular swimmer there are specially made swim prostheses that you can get. These you have to buy as they aren't available on the NHS. They don’t get damaged by the chorine and salt. You can use a soft fabric cover to fit over the silicone surface, although the prosthesis may not sit as well. This can prevent a rash or skin reaction developing, which might happen if you get hot and sweat behind your prosthesis. A double mastectomy is the removal of both breasts following a breast cancer diagnosis or due to a family history of breast cancer. Learn more here. READ MOREGenerally, you should look after a silicone breast prosthesis as you would your own skin. Wash it daily in warm soapy water and dry it with a towel. Realistic appearance: Silicone breast forms are designed to closely resemble the appearance of natural breasts, including details like skin texture, color, and movement. The purpose of a breast prosthesis is to replicate part, or all, of the breast following a mastectomy.

Breast prostheses may be an option for people who do not want reconstructive surgery, or want a more affordable way to maintain the same look as before their mastectomy. Cost: Insurance may cover some or all of the cost, but it likely will not cover the cost of custom sets.

If you carry your prosthesis in your hand luggage this is classed as medical equipment so won’t be restricted. Pam's breast cancer story Durability: Silicone breast forms are generally more durable and long-lasting than other types of breast forms, as they are resistant to tearing and can withstand heat and cold. Most breast prostheses are made from soft silicone gel (which is anti-allergenic), encased in a thin film. They’re moulded to resemble the natural shape of a woman’s breast, or part of a breast. The outer surface feels soft and smooth and may include a nipple outline. A person can also choose to get a prosthetic nipple. These are made of silicone and a person can wear them on a prosthesis or a reconstructed breast. They come in different sizes and skin colors. Some hospitals may custom make them to match a person’s other nipple.
