Although the two in the audience don’t know it yet, the third passenger won’t be appearing onstage because she has just died of a heart attack. Having said that, my next holiday will be mainly on trains and I hope I meet as many interesting people on my trip as were in the book - I just hope I like them. Given this cast of characters, even at the age of 12 I would have had a fairly accurate expectation of the likely outcome of the plot.

Instead the gap between Last Term at Malory Towers and the foothills of serious literature was plugged, most enjoyably, by period adventure stories. The journey presents fleeting snapshots of other lives, and a vision of all those weddings culminating on provincial platforms. Myatt is an imperfect man (but he is far from the most imperfect in its cast of characters), and he turns out to be quite a schemer in the end, but he is also kind, brave and honourable at various points, including when he leaves the train and takes risks to get his mistress out of trouble. Two films were adapted from Greene's novel: The 1934 Orient Express and the BBC TV adaptation 1962 Stamboul Train. That's some baggage there for all of us born Jewish whatever religion or philosophy we actually espouse. Among the preparations for writing his book, he mentions taking notes on a train journey to Cologne – "you may be sure the allotments outside Bruges were just where I placed them in April, 1931".
